(12,265 posts)Teaching diversity training using the white privilege model is the only way to begin to open the door. Pointing out their obvious privilege.

(19,114 posts)There is no way you make a burglary a bigger story than a homicide without really thinking about it. Who gets that above the fold big headline is a big decision every day in every newspaper.

(19,114 posts)Rarely do they even have a photo in the article if the suspect is white. They've been called out on it publicly when they didn't show a suspect because he was a minor who was white, but the next week they showed a picture of a minor black child of the same age suspected of a lesser crime.
The example above is pretty egregious too. If you didn't read the headlines and just got a glance you'd be under the impression the black suspect is suspected of murder. And they make it clear the picture is from jail for the black suspect, many times when they do show a white suspect they find a care free picture off from their Facebook or high school year book.
Been going on for generations.

(22,438 posts)The current best practice in designing newspaper section fronts requires a "centerpiece" -- a pretty graphic that anchors the page. The burglary story is the centerpiece simply because they had a photo. Sometimes the centerpiece is also the lead story on the page, and its placement and the design of the rest of the page establishes this CP as the lead. In this case, it should not be, and page designer erred in not putting the homicide arrest across the top of the page, which would have established a stronger article hierarchy. Also, both mug shots should be the same size -- or, in a practice that is currently becoming more common -- not used at all.
ETA: None of which is meant to deny the existence of white supremacy within our society and institutions. The page designer could have mitigated what they were given, and didn't.

(12,858 posts)Sure some job of framing the story of blacks as mega criminals!
(Note how super small the picture of the white killer is!)
Wonder how many whites paid enough attention to the smaller story to see actual race of killer

(38,328 posts)Traveling across the nation, no matter where I went, the "scary black person of the day" was a regular news feature.
This was true even in places where 90% of the population was white, and 90% of the crimes were committed by white people.
I quit watching television news a long time ago. When my wife and I travel we never turn on the television.
