The GOP convention is scheduled for 8/24 to 8/27/20.
Some halfway normal candidate without perceived huge Trump ties or bull goose loony craziness is selected say Nikki Haley?
Who else could be a replacement GOP candidate?
Then the Lincoln Project (who we should not trust) pivots to the new GOP candidate and the GOP takes credit for removing Trump.
Trump steps down and is pardoned by Pence who serves out the end of the Trump POTUS but also removes himself from the 2020 ticket.
Trump is blamed for mismanaging the pandemic. The Democratic Party is blamed for everything else.
I think we should be prepared for something like a replacement for Trump happening, a fresh face to most voters.
Also these never Trump GOP ala the Lincoln Project are not pals of the Democratic Party but GOP looking to position themselves for opportunity and political survival.

(1,789 posts)it would have been been started long ago and included all the GOP Senators who had no stomach for dumping Trump given the evidence and the chance at his trial. It would guarantee a loss, and if you're going to lose anyway, why make it worse?

Color me a skeptic but I believe these guys are trying to endear themselves with Democrats purely to gain trust, after which they will turn on us and abuse that trust.
My simple rule of thumb: Do not trust any Republican. I've been bitten too many times by those snakes, both in personal and business dealings.

Glad you perceive as I perceive.
Vote.

It's better" because they're proven the kind of moderate conservatives who can work with Democratic liberals to make democracy function as it must if it's to continue.

(14,275 posts)That was the end goal. They have accomplished their paymaster's mission. They no longer have use for Trump.
But even if they did offer him such a deal, he's too stupid to take it.

(6,398 posts)One, the GOP made sure NO ONE and I mean absolutely NO ONE could challenge Trump for the nomination. They've seen the mistakes of the Democratic Party and chose not to indulge in that.
Of course, they did this prior to the pandemic, economic collapse, racial issues boiling over, etc. They assumed nothing major, outside of a freak hurricane would happen. But now, they've painted themselves into a corner, they probably gave up plans to take the White House for the next eight years and are trying to figure out how they can retake at least one branch of Congress.

(2,850 posts)They could have gotten together and decided he isn't working out, and decided on a party line along the lines of "we love his policies, but we have to stand with the rule of law".
They didn't do that because they are terrified of his voters and his cult of personality. His "I could shoot someone on 5th avenue and not lose support" comment was prophetic. His base hasn't left him in spite of the pandemic and the resulting shitty economy.
The GOP is going to be screwed either way, so they will keep the asshole around, and try to win him a second term by cheating.

(8,822 posts)The post was specifically about how dire it is to beat Trump and the GOP and how cavorting with GOP ends up with us being stabbed in the back.
The next 7 months are not a smooth sail and will be marked by blind side surprises.

(19,846 posts)So basically they'd lose with or without Trump. Lose with him and at least they hold onto the base for later.
The party leaders tend to take the long view on these things (more than Democrats do) and they know they're better off losing with Trump and going into a rebuild mode.

(8,822 posts)Most of the GOP leadership must be ready to clean up the mess and move on.
Replacing Trump at GOP convention is much neater for the GOP as a Party than impeachment.
The red hats are Trump's useful idiots and do not have long memories except stuff like overwhelmingly racists and greedy..
I am not predicting Trump will be replaced but it could happen.
What if Trump gets CV19 Summer 2020 and is replaced? Bet the anti Trump GOP would be in favor.

but who is there?
PufPuf23
(8,822 posts)Nikki Haley was who crossed my mind.
Contrary to others in this thread, I think the scenario of dumping Trump at convention is viable however unlikely without a CV19 assist.
