Freeloading six year-olds! Don't work or pay taxes, but expect lunch money and schools!

(7,290 posts)Sorry, when I see a factual inaccuracy, I'll attempt to correct it.

(34,108 posts)Because you haven't offered anything of substance.
The 47% does not include children, unless the children are filing income taxes. While Mitt may be fuzzy on what comprises the 47%, it's really not confusing - it's 47% of tax filers.
Lex
(34,108 posts)He just didn't.
SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)He said 47% don't pay taxes. Just because he's too stupid to know 47% of what doesn't mean we have to be just as stupid as he is.
So no, the 47% doesn't include freeloading six year olds.

(34,108 posts)Wrong. He didn't say that. Get your facts straight before you start hauling out the word "stupid."

(7,290 posts)"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what These are people who pay no income tax."

(7,290 posts)According to new data from the Tax Policy Center, this year 46.4 percent of tax filers will have no federal income tax liability. The following table presents the data.
I read the post below, and the information is incorrect. The number comes from the Tax Policy Center, with data drawn from the IRS. It is calculated based on the number of tax filers that have an income tax liability divided by the total number of filers.
Unless a six year old has to file a tax return, he or she isn't included in the number.

(14,047 posts)Then they must have mislabeled their own chart and mis-applied it.
1. The chart is labeled "Percentage of U.S. Population" not "Tax Filers"
2. Quote from the article: "That means 151.7 million Americans paid nothing in 2009."
The workforce in 2009 was about 155 million, the population was about 305 million. So how could that 151.7 million NOT include children?

(14,047 posts)And it pains me to link to one their sites, but...
http://blog.heritage.org/2012/02/19/chart-of-the-week-nearly-half-of-all-americans-dont-pay-income-taxes/
They took the "Percentage of Americans Not Represented on a Tax Return"
Not percentage of adults. Not percentage of workers. Not percentage of Tax filers.
When they say that 151 million Americans paid no taxes, they are including children, the elderly, the disabled. The math doesn't work any other way.

(50,339 posts)"And that data demonstrates that many of the ultrarich can and do reduce their tax liability to very low levels, even zero. Besides the six who paid no federal income tax, the I.R.S. reported that 27 paid from zero to 10 percent of their adjusted gross incomes and another 89 paid between 10 and 15 percent, which is close to the 13.9 percent rate that Mr. Romney disclosed that he paid in 2010. (At the other end of the spectrum, 82 paid 30 to 35 percent. None paid more than 35 percent.) So more than a quarter of the people earning an average of over $200 million in 2009 paid less than 15 percent of their adjusted gross income in taxes."
