Richard Wolffe: Don't call it a comeback: Trump's Tulsa rally was just another sad farce

Don't call it a comeback: Trump's Tulsa rally was just another sad farce
Richard Wolffe
Campaign officials should be ready for firings and fury after a pathetic event made worse by wretched attempted excuses
Published on Sat 20 Jun 2020 22.41 EDT

There have been so many reasons to feel embarrassed about Donald Trump.

There was the time he paid off a porn star. There was the time he lied about the size of his inauguration crowd. The time he talked about the big water around Puerto Rico. The time he thought you could kill the coronavirus by injecting yourself with bleach.

But nothing truly comes close to the embarrassment of his so-called comeback rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday.

It was so toe-curlingly cringeworthy, such a crushing humiliation. There are 80s pop bands who have enjoyed greater comebacks than Donald Trump.

To understand how much of his insides will always melt at the thought of that Tulsa rally, it’s worth quoting Trump’s fine words just before he boarded Marine One at the White House.

“The event in Oklahoma is unbelievable,” he boasted. “The crowds are unbelievable. They haven’t seen anything like it. And we will go there now. We’ll give a, hopefully, good speech. We’re going to see a lot of great people, a lot of great friends. And pretty much, that’s it. OK?”

We really haven’t seen anything like that. For a man who loves peddling superlatives, this was the worst measure of his oh-so-sad popularity. The lowest point in electoral incompetence. The saddest campaign fiasco.

You cannot call a virus a hoax and then tell people that they must sign a document stating that you are not liable if they get sick or die from said virus.

Many of us got this one right and I didn't even know that the teenagers were punking him as well.

The media went out of their way to find the most ardent supporters to say the stupidest things about their loyalty to Trump and their sky-high expectations for the rally. It's like none of them could walk the line of people waiting to get in and do a quick count: There aren't enough people here for a decent game of 43 Man Squamish, let alone fill this venue.

... It seemed they were hoping for a spectacle, be it clashes between magats and protesters, or tens of thousands of idiots super-spreading COVID.

The build-up was beyond depressing. Which for once, helped our case because...well..womp womp.

It would seem that he could still get a full arena and overflow from the actual folks who would bother to attend. Surely enough tickets were requested from actual MAGATS to do that.

The real outcome here is his gloating over the tickets requested, vs how many actually bothered to attend.

That must be KILLING him!!!!

Wolffe uses the term "comeback" 5 times in this article, including the phrase "so-called comeback", yet he never once tells us who called it a comeback. Other than him. What is the point with this angle?

Reporting ginormous numbers to fluff up BMI45’s ego. I wonder how many MAGATs thought, “I don’t want to fight crowds like that to get in. Oh well, there’ll be a full house so I won’t be missed.”

a mansion, some other luxury cars, a condo, a yacht and I think a plane. Also, he paid Mrs. Eric tRump plus Don Jr.'s girlfriend each $15,000 a month. So, there will be breakups once the cash stops flowing. Ah, well, true love never did run smoothly.

He’ll negotiate with Pence for pardons for all his federal crimes, but fortunately the state ones remain. He’s so arrogant that he will assume that he can buy his way out of any problems there by paying civil fines.

It would create an interesting conundrum for Pence. To protect himself, because we all know that Pence has been a willing participant in Trump’s obstruction, Pence would need Trump to first pardon him. Then he would take over and pardon Trump. But if Pence gets a pardon, it’s effectively an admission of guilt and probably the end of any future political career.
