During a private fundraiser earlier this year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a small group of wealthy contributors what he truly thinks of all the voters who support President Barack Obama. He dismissed these Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, who don't assume responsibility for their lives, and who think government should take care of them. Fielding a question from a donor about how he could triumph in November, Romney replied:
There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what These are people who pay no income tax.
Romney went on: "[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
Mother Jones has obtained video of Romney at this intimate fundraiserwhere he candidly discussed his campaign strategy and foreign policy ideas in stark terms he does not use in publicand has confirmed its authenticity. To protect the confidential source who provided the video, we have blurred some of the image, and we will not identify the date or location of the event, which occurred after Romney had clinched the Republican presidential nomination. Here is Romney expressing his disdain for Americans who back the president:

(53,778 posts)Romney's not very smart here. He's telling backers that he's already given up on 47% of the voters, those who he alleges don't pay taxes and will vote for the President no matter what. In other words, by his math, he and the President are fighting over the remaining 53% of the voters. Which means he has to get 94.5% of the 53% of remaining voters to get to a winning 50.1% of the total vote in November. That's an awful steep hill to climb. It's very, very, very seldom that any candidate gets 94.5% of any segment of voters, let alone a group that comprises much more than just his right wing base. Not smart. He would have been better off telling his backers that the President's base made up only 38-40% of people who would vote for him no matter and leave a larger percentage up for grabs. But then he wouldn't be Romney, whose numbers, along with Ryan's, have never added up.

Romney is dead and buried. Or he might still be alive, but he's buried. His chance to become President just hit zero.

"Actually, if you look at the facts, you learn that the great bulk of those who pay no income tax pay other taxes; also, many of the people in the no-income-tax category are (a) elderly (b) students or (c) having a bad year, having lost a job that is, theyre people who have paid income taxes in the past and/or will pay income taxes in the future. The idea that half of Americans are just grifters is grotesque."

But where Romney errs is his conclusion that I am remotely willing to bash and damage people that are less fortunate that I am and who work JUST AS HARD. I get donation mailers from Romney, even though I have never given to a republican. I have and will continue rip them up and throw them into trash. THis video only proves me right about how I view that SOS.

I'd definitely prefer to have my husband beside me, sharing in our child's life.

(24,411 posts)I am angry right along with you!
Mitt Romney said those things about AMERICANS. And it is rare that an American has a perfect, charmed life. We all have suffering, and bad things that happen. And we all need support and help sometimes. We don't need this silver-spooned, prep-school brat mocking us.
I am so sorry about the loss of your husband. You are a good and decent person--keeping it together for your child. You deserve that Social Security to help you through.
When Mitt Romney insulted 47 percent of America--he insulted all of us!!
He insulted everyone on Medicare. He insulted everyone on Medicaid. He insulted anyone who takes Social Security. He insulted everyone who believes that healthcare issues shouldn't bankrupt families. He insulted anyone who has ever been on unemployment or needed food stamps or welfare temporarily.
That is more than 47 percent of the country---that's more like 85 percent of the country! Does this jerk realize what he has said????
Anyone who has taken government help or thinks the government should help others is someone who "doesn't care about their lives." What a complete idiot!
It's real easy for Mitt Romney to be ignorant. All of that time spent on yachts, and in his multiple homes. He resents anyone who is not uber rich. Because really, from what he described--only the top 5 percent of wage earners NEVER need any assistance from the government.
The good news is, Glitterati--Romney just put the final nail in his campaign coffin. And today was supposed to be this big re-launch of his campaign. HA! He's toast, and we can all toast to that!
Glitterati
(3,182 posts)What I hope is happening all across the US today is that people who were on the fence in this election are wondering why Mitt Romney hates their family members so much.
EVERYONE has someone in their family like me - on Social Security, or Medicare, or Medicaid, or Food Stamps. No one but the 1% like Romney has escaped the hardships this Republican economy has wrought.
Romney is talking about their Mothers and Fathers, their sisters and brothers, their loved ones! And he just called them lazy and shiftless!
Let us hope this opens the eyes of so many.
I'm really feeling that Obama Hope thing today.

I do not think this will sink him.. too many stupid, ignorant people and the fascists/plutocrats will cheat, as they did in 2000 and 2004 and 2008.. so--
We have to actually DO something..
We should all sign up for the Obama telephone banks that were run in 2008. Have a 'house party' or whatever they were called. It involves having friends over for a couple hours, calling likely voters in certain regions of the country to urge people to go out and vote..
I did 3 of them in 2008.. a small contribution, but since I live in NY, which My Main Man will win, but in a very republican Congressional District, which he will lose, it is a way I can help..

(3,557 posts)I have a 70% rating from the VA for PTSD relating to my combat experiences and I collect roughly $1,500 a month tax free from the government. I joined the Army and fought in a war that I was ordered to fight in. I busted my ass in Iraq and gave my all to my fellow Soldiers and a questionable cause. As a result, I have blood all over my hands and a pretty severe case of PTSD. Much of my life is in ruins, I'm a complete freak when I'm out in public, my relationship with my wife and my kids is in shambles (I have a hard time expressing positive emotions like love, even though I consider myself a kind and loving person), and I can hardly keep a job in the civilian world. Do I feel entitled to the money I get? You bet! And I believe every veteran who receives disability compensation from the VA has earned it too!
I also received a veterans hiring preference when I got a federal government job. As a disabled veteran, I made it to the top of the list for potential candidates and, essentially, had to be offered the job before any non disabled veterans could even be considered. Is this unfair to others? Yeah, probably. I'll admit that. However, if I didn't have this hiring preference I probably wouldn't have a job right now and I'd get sucking down a 100% disability rating from the VA and collecting SSDI as well. Instead, the government threw me another bone and gave me the chance to enjoy gainful employment. I love my job and I love working for the government. I love the feeling of contributing to society and it gives me some sense of atonement for what I did in the war in Iraq. The government broke me and I fully believe that they owe it to me to help me take care of myself and to have the opportunity to provide for my family.
I'm so grateful for the help and benefits I receive. Without the government I'm pretty sure I'd either be dead or homeless. There is no way I would have any semblance of a normal life without our government.
Anyone who doesn't agree with me can eat dirt with the rest of the guys I buried in the war.

(9,314 posts)8 percent are unemployed because Bush* tanked the economy, and the rest are underemployed and don't make enough to pay taxes. I imagine some of the underemployed are making too few dollars because of Republican policies focusing on UNION BUSTING and paying minimum wage or less. In short, Mitt Romney, 27 percent pay no taxes because of the living standards forced on them by Republican policies. So why are you surprised they are not going to vote for you? They are not "dependent" -- they are exploited by you and other people like you. And I suppose you think those living with their retirement have not earned it ....
But go ahead, try and "take" the election. Then you will be in a position to cancel the mortgage interest tax deduction, the deduction on one's Federal taxes for state and local income taxes, and all capital gains taxes. That way, you will be increasing the taxes on the 47 percent by virtue of eliminating deductions they need, and you will be rewarding your own donors. What a win-win situation for you.

No way can Romney take this back. We are seeing time and time again what his character is made of, and it is not much of anything very nice or of substance. The man is an opportunist to say the least, he preys upon those he feels he can bully, because he is a bully.
You see, I was always taught that your "true character" is when you do/say things and nobody is looking. When you say/do things when you know people are looking, that can be fake.
Well, Mr. Romney, the 47% of "we people" were not looking, but now we see what you think of us.

(332 posts)Seriously, how do you go about writing off 47 fucking percent of the entire country like it's nothing?! I hope the asshole realizes that he is writing off a lot of people serving in the military and civil service, most of whom earn way, way less than 250,000 a year. He should basically come out on live tv and yell ,"I don't give a fuck about MOST of you assholes" from this moment on !!!

You think you know American citizens? I think you are about to learn that American citizens are a lot different than your entitled ass when their children are hungry, they serve the country risking life and limb, and you preach like you know what it is to be poor.
Asshole.

(35,670 posts)if I had to write the background of this Leder guy, I could not come up with anything more nefarious than what is in this story. Absolutely mind-boggling.
Oh and that picture--what an arrogant prick.
These people should be in jail, not running for office or supporting the running for office of their ilk.

(3 posts)As if there were any doubt at this point.
And we've not yet had a single debate. Ouch.
The Obama campaign had this thing gamed out and essentially locked up for months now with a metric shiat ton of strategically timed dirt. The drip drip really picked up in July and it's been bad cycle after bad cycle after self-inflicted wound for Mittens ever since.
We need to realistically be talking landslide now, because once Romney gets skewered in the debates he will be absolutely buried in the polls.

(13,297 posts)Romney might try to play 'no tax returns' with the debates and see if he can weather having 'no debates' either and just put out a policy paper.
he's that crazy!

he screws up his line about the dems too -- says: "He'll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich" but Romney is not even listening to himself. Like a broken machine on auto pilot.

(13,985 posts)that the GOP and the corporations behind it actually want Obama to win, so they can have Jeb Bush run in 2016.
Thats would explain why this is happening, although would be way too twisted even for the repukes.

(37,364 posts)since that is who he's really talking about--American voters. Voters for the President are not part of another country, we're not foreign or interlopers of some sort. We are not "the Other" any more than the President is. He needs to be called on making us "the Other."

(459 posts)to understand that these so called freeloaders have worked much harder than the exhalted one to get much less. My problem with his bullshit is that he's had it handed to him through government welfare programs that hand millions to rich people and there's no thankfulness coming from the over previleged ass wipe.

(42,290 posts)Spoken with an implied sneer, of course.
Conservatives have been trying for YEARS to redefine that word to be synonymous with "handout" or "gift". Or, as Rmoney himself says, "Free stuff"
Now, last time I looked at the definition of "entitlement" it meant a a right to benefits specified especially by law or contract .
And these are rights that have been fought for for decades.
And you can't call yourself a "conservative" if all you want to do is tear down the achievements of the past.
