Is Donald Trump More Dangerous Than Roy Cohn? The Rosenbergs' Granddaughter Says Yes

Filmmaker Ivy Meeropol has ample reason to resent Roy Cohn, Donald Trump’s late, mob-affiliated mentor.

In 1951, over a decade and a half before Meeropol was born, Cohn—acting as a U.S. Department of Justice prosecutor—pushed for the execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, her grandparents, on espionage charges. In the years after the Rosenbergs’ deaths by electric chair—which orphaned their young sons, Michael (Meeropol’s father) and Robert—Cohn would admit to suborning perjury from Rosenberg’s brother and other serious ethical breaches during the trial.

Meeropol wrestled with this chapter of her family’s history in her 2004 film debut, Heir to an Execution. Afterward she was keen to move on to other subjects that could establish her filmmaking identity apart from her family’s history—and to move past Cohn, who died in 1986. But Meeropol found herself again entangled with Cohn’s legacy in 2016 when Cohn’s protégé was elected president.

“Honestly, the day after [Donald] Trump was elected…my immediate feeling was, Roy Cohn is moving into the White House,” Meeropol told Vanity Fair on Wednesday. “And a lot of people don’t even know who Roy Cohn is and what that means.”

After the Rosenberg trial Cohn made a name for himself as the rapacious lawyer and fixer to Senator Joseph McCarthy, Genovese mob boss Anthony “Fat Tony” Salerno, various Republican politicians, and the New York Catholic archdiocese. He was a fixture at Studio 54 and in Manhattan’s elite social circles, despite his reputation for evading taxes, not paying his bills, and flexing sinister connections.

recently...I read a book about them as a teenager. Don't remember the name, or the author, but it shook me up, and left a mark. Had no idea Roy Cohn was part of that. I read Malcolm-X around the same time...also left a mark. I think the memory of one, led to the other. So weird how much from back there, is in my face.

Of course Trump is more dangerous!

He’s the president of the United States!

Cohn was just a scum bag lawyer.
