We need to update handcuffing

And ‘detaining’ by police

Handcuffs haven’t been modernized and often escalate otherwise harmless incidents into Mass carnage and death.

Police unions should be leading this charge.

There’s gotta be a better way.

1. I'm not sure how I would react if someone tried to handcuff me behind my back. I'd do OK in front.

I get why police do that, but still.

2. Ya can't be too careful if you're a cop.

I recall a case a couple'a years ago. A guy was handcuffed, hands behind his back in the back of a cop car. He managed to commit suicide with a gun.

Now imagine if that guy was planning to suit the cop, instead.

3. Was there ever an independent investigation on that case?

I recall there was quite a bit of dispute over the police findings. It has always been a fishy story and is probably one of those cases in the past where killer cops got away with it. I have never heard of an independent review of that case.

4. So, the cops didn't search him for a gun

because if your hands are cuffed behind your back, there are only a few places you can reach.

So, ultimately, the cops did a poor job in searching him.

5. Also, "on the ground" bullshit!

Cuffs behind your back, face down on the ground, totally helpless and humiliated. Then the knee on the neck to cut off your oxygen. Yeah, there needs to be a lot of reforms.

6. I think we need an overhaul of what constitutes arrest

I think a lot of petty crimes should be handled by giving a citation. Maybe some should require going in front of a judge. There will be some that skip but I think the percentage would not be large. If you are stopped for a DUI, a breathalyzer is given and a citation to appear in front of a judge a few days later. If a trial is needed a date is determined and ordered to report for court date. I don’t like the idea of people sitting in jail for days or longer and then found innocent of charges. That sucks for all.
