General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWe have entered phase three here in upstate New York. I am worried.
Overall the people of New York did a good job of wearing masks, social distancing. The Number of infections have dropped dramatically. Some areas of New York are reporting no new cases. It helps when you have a Governor who gives the people an honest update everyday on the virus. A Governor who puts a plan in place and sticks to it. Cuomo said it best when dealing with virus. The people can be smart about it or they can be stupid about, it's up to us.
Now that things are starting to slowly reopen I have been watching people closely. I am seeing some people, not a lot, starting to relax, letting their guard down.
We should know how well our reopening does in about a month. New York City is going to be place that is very hard to reopen. Just because it's New York City.

(206,048 posts)How far upstate are you? I'm just south of Lake George and I'm worried about the influx of seasonal tourists. Just last week when I was out I saw cars from Alabama and Tennessee! I was hoping that the tourist season would be curtailed this year, but apparently it's starting...

(206,048 posts)I don't know what the plans are for the racing season or for SPAC, but I doubt that will discourage the tourists from what I've seen just so far...

(206,048 posts)My Dad used to borrow the mayor's box, so we saw celebrities sometimes. I met David Cassidy once and Tom Brokaw gave me a dirty look, LOL
My Dad always came out ahead, he'd bet on jockies. His favorite was Willie Shoemaker.
But even if the track is closed to crowds, that doesn't mean tourists from all over won't show up as usual. We're already seeing it up here where they're heading to the beaches. My friend has a teenage daughter who works in one of the shops and she said that they aren't necessarily wearing masks even though they're required in every store, they have signs right on the door.

Worried about tourists too.

(65,191 posts)Cases are about the same day to day, but not going down.
Deaths are flat & lower than a month ago, daily.
Hospital bed usage is down, & ICU spots are down.
But, I'm noticing a pretty dramatic increase of folks sans masks. 3 weeks ago 19 of 20 people in the supermarket were masked.
Now, it's 2 in 3. People may be relaxing too fast!
But, with 3 weeks in the rear view, we're not seeing any bad news.

(4,379 posts)We have learned some things, but there is so many unanswered questions. I think the best way to look at the virus is, It's the boss and we are still at the beginning of the pandemic.

(65,191 posts)I think phased reopening is a fine plan, but it still does rely on people being responsible.
A 30% drop in mask compliance in 3 weeks seems relaxing too fast.

I'm still wearing mine. But this thing falls to <50% & things could go sideways.

(4,379 posts)Re-opening the city is going to be an extremely tough job. If New York City can re-open without a spike in cases, the whole dam country should follow its lead.

(22,050 posts)Our place is on the Delaware river near a village called Callicoon. It's something of a weekend destination for NYC folks among others. In the last couple of years, there has been a tremendous amount of improvements to the area in order to boost its tourist economy.
In spite of the coronavirus, the investments seem to be paying off. Last weekend, the downtown area was packed with people. The restaurants were serving outdoor tables and take-out. The Farmers' Market was crowded, (they had a queue set up to limit the number of people in the market area). The hotels and inns had guests. Anecdotally, I'm aware of several (illegal?) AirBNB's that had tenants.
My impression was that nearly everyone wore a mask and many wore gloves. People tried to keep their distance from one another and there was a general feeling of joy and respect.
We retreated up here from the city ahead of the crisis because we sensed something bad was going to happen, particularly since Trump had said there really wasn't a problem. Since he lies all the time, that told me we had to get out of Dodge! It's been a strange but comfortable 3-1/2 months and I think we'll be here at least until September. I'm incredibly fortunate and grateful that I can work remotely and continue to earn my salary. I fear for all those who aren't as lucky as we are.
In contrast, I had to make a supply run into Monticello, NY which is about a half hour away, and what I saw was very different. Lots of people without masks standing right next to one another. Except at Home Depot where employees were policing the social distancing rules and not admitting customers without face coverings. In my drive through the town, many people on the streets were also without masks.
I find this very strange. The virus is based on science, that is, chemistry, biology and physics. It doesn't have an opinion. It doesn't have a Twitter account. It doesn't have a social preference. It exists to replicate and it uses human bodies to do so. Is that really so hard to understand?
When did Americans become so ignorant of science? To me, it's incomprehensible.

(65,180 posts)PA should have all areas in the green phase by sometime in July. Wolf and Levine have done a great job. I saw contact tracing could be higher, but the fact that new cases are still low after all counties left the red phase is a good sign. Still going to take all precautions, as should those in NY.

(84 posts)Mask wearing and social distancing in small local stores is spotty. Some store clerks aren't wearing masks properly and lots of customers ignore distancing. I don't go out much but it's distressing when I do.
I haven't gone back to my job at a winery nearby, just waiting to see what happens as people return to the area for wine tastings.
