Gay Rights Ruling Complicates Trump Effort to Keep Evangelicals

WASHINGTON—A landmark Supreme Court ruling in favor of LGBT workers Monday injected fresh uncertainty into President Trump’s aggressive efforts to maintain the support of evangelical voters for his reelection campaign.

Some conservatives condemned the ruling that federal civil-rights law prohibits employers from discriminating against workers on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity, focusing much of their ire on Justice Neil Gorsuch, an appointee of President Trump, who voted with the majority in the 6-3 ruling and wrote the opinion.

The decision comes after the president has seen some erosion in his support among religious voters, according to polls. He has been actively courting those voters, pushing to reopen churches amid the coronavirus pandemic, making visits to religious sites and advancing policies favored by social conservatives.

While some critics suggested the decision could have lasting impact on Mr. Trump’s electoral fortunes, people close to the president contended it was just one ruling and that the president’s record on religious issues would keep him in good standing.

That will be the most talked about SCOTUS ruling from this term, and will absorb national attention from the date of the decision's release to Election Day.

Besides, disappointment on the part of the fundies over equal rights will not cause them to vote for Joe Biden. The religious right-wing is salivating hard at the idea of replacing RBG in the next four years. Maybe they aren't convinced that Trump makes the very best picks, but they sure as hell believe that his picks are better for their agenda than anything any Democratic president would do.

And with this ruling, "the libz" were decidedly not "owned," so of COURSE this will hurt him.

To his followers, he had one job, and apparently he can't even do that.
