www.8cantwait.orgThis is a call to action!
I just got off the phone with my mayor and these 8-actions will be part of the policing reform meeting at this week's council meeting.
It is being included because I brought it up. I can be that easy!
The energy is here for change. We must take advantage of the time we are in and contact our policy makers.

(6,150 posts)This might be one of those Malcolm (Defund the Police) vs. Martin (8cantwait) principles in effect.
Change is good. No change is VERY bad.

(6,150 posts)As an advocate of defunding the police, I don't see these "policies" creating change. There will still be officers who do these things, and there will still be other officers who protect them.
I believe that police departments need to be smaller, much smaller, and the money from the police department budget would be spent on first responders who know how to defuse situations without violence.
Police are taught to use violence. For hours and hours of training - violence. To think that a few hours of new training, or some policies are going to create change. NO.
Even after George Floyd was murdered. Even after waves of protests, there are still cops who are assaulting black people. I'm not just talking about the taser shooting in Atlanta. It's all over the country. Cops are taught to resort to violence.
Cops who do not know how to respond except with violence need to be fired, and the police department needs to learn to make do without them.

(7,396 posts)our suburb population is 30,000 with 49 licensed police. There has been ZERO over-site of the police department by the city council. The reform for my city will include every 6-month over-site review by the council. The council cannot just de-fund the police department unless they know there are major issues. The city of Minneapolis is calling for de-funding, because they KNOW the issues with their policing and it is long standing.
Not all police departments can just move into de-funding without proven reasons. So, instituting over-site and policies such as "8 can't wait" are good actions to take.
That makes sense.
