BOSTON The Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary faded into the background here in recent months as the coronavirus pandemic overshadowed everything else. But if the most recent Senate debate between Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Joe Kennedy III is any indication, thats about to change.
The incumbent senator derided Kennedy on Monday as a "progressive in name only" and called him out for working for a conservative Republican district attorney early in his career. Markey also slammed the four-term congressman for failing to lead on any number of issues, ranging from Medicare-for-All to climate change to the militarization of law enforcement.
Markey didnt have much choice but to let it rip. Hes trailed Kennedy in most public polls taken this year, has less money in the bank and the Covid-19 crisis has served to complicate his task of capturing attention against the scion of the states most prominent political family.
"Everyone's going to pull out the stops now on both sides for the rest of this race, all the way to Sept. 1. And there's not a lot of time left," said Democratic strategist Mary Anne Marsh. "Markey is running like someone who doesn't feel like he's in the lead but he's fighting hard to make up the difference there. And Joe Kennedy's fighting to make sure he wins."

(32 posts)Markey is a loyal, truly liberal democrat, while Kennedy acts like an entitled, rich brat. Kennedy is, and has been, unable to articulate in any way a reason for his candidacy against such a stalwart of the party. As a longtime Massachusetts Democrat, this is the first time I have been so disappointed by a Kennedy.

(49,410 posts)Whew, what a crowded field it was ,including former Senator Sparky Matsunaga's son.
I signed on again for Ed's successful 2004 re-election. He was a nice enough guy although he backed Joe Lieberman. I was a Kerry guy all the way. Rep. Abercrombie was a Deaniac.
