I have been thinking about that lately and can't help note the similarities. The Arab spring was sparked by a street vegetable seller that was harassed by police about permits. Frustrated with the loss of his livelihood he set himself on fire and that let to events that toppled governments in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and almost a decade of civil war in Syria.
Although the US is a "liberal democracy" on paper, there are still many aspects of its power structure that are incredibly undemocratic and oppressive, especially if you are not part of the preferred white middle class and higher demographic. It is almost a perfect storm of sorts: the pandemic led to soaring unemployment, in particular among young people, who now have time out of the rat race to notice the barrage of killings of minorities by testosterone loaded state sanctioned mafia like forces. And it is a barrage: one death after another in close succession.
Now will this go as far as the Arab spring ? I don't know. But I firmly believe the status quo is dead , there is no turning back. As an older Millennial I can't help but feel pride at what the upcoming generation is doing in the street with direct action, that is the only thing that works, that is the only thing that brings change.
