The county health department here in Sedgwick County KS set up a free testing station in the Senior/Community Center next to my Senior sixplex. I and my quite elderly neighbor lady seemed to be the only ones out of thirty or so residents who cared enough to get the swab test even though another lady resident just a few apartments down had covid 19 way back at the beginning (Feb/March), thankfully she recovered from the pneumonia caused by it and is out walking her doggy every day.
I went over and told another elderly couple here about it and they acted like I offended them, I have helped them with their tv and phone and computer set up several times (probably no more). They are both in their mid to late 70s and have numerous health issues but think Jesus is protecting them (I guess). Fundies....hmmm.
Most of the residents here and in nearby Wichita act as if the pandemic is over and I see them running in and out of this complex daily...no masks...no seeming concerns...on my trips for groceries (about every 7 to 10 days, I order online and pick them up) traffic is heavy and again, very few masks are seen...people just don't care and are foolish (imo)...the nursing home two blocks away had 50+ residents and staff infected and several deaths a couple of months back and just this week another facility 10 miles away announced that at least 14 residents and staff are currently infected...so the virus is definitely here and still growing.
The test was a bit uncomfortable but not bad. I'm a bit anxious for the results (they said 5 to 7 days) but have had no symptoms other than my usual allergies and a headache here and there so I should be good...Okay, that was my rant....

(3,888 posts)Sounds like people in your neighborhood act about the same as those in mine.
No wonder we have the most cases of Covid in the world.

(32,006 posts)by those who are so cavalier about getting Covid-19. Or, like you said, think God will protect them.
Was talking to an acquaintance I ran into the other day who lives across the border from me in western PA. I said to her that it was fantastic that her county was doing so well preventing the spread of the virus and so few deaths. (They update us on the news every night by county)
She replied with an eye roll that wearing masks is required by law in public spaces in PA and that it was getting to be too much. Hey, if I get it, I get it, she said, throwing her hands up (meaning the virus). This lady is 76 years old....shes a former high school swimming coach who swims laps 5 days a week and is in better shape than I am ... I said, Oh, you dont really mean that, do you? and she replied Eh, Ive lived a good long time. I know she has a couple grown kids and several grandchildren.... it just boggles my mind to hear people talk this way!
And of course, since we ran into each other in a store in Ohio ...(Where De Wine thinks requiring wearing masks is government overreach) .... she wasnt wearing a mask ....

(10,208 posts)That is all. Those who think its been mastered and dropping precautions will return us the where we were, with hospitals overwhelmed. Flattening the curve is not the same as overcoming the pandemic. I suppose if everyone stuck to the restrictions until there was a vaccine we could limit its ultimate spread, but that doesnt look to be the case. Ill be happily surprised if the numbers stay low but I doubt that will be the case. By the time things get bad enough to reinitiate restrictions the cat will be out of the bag and infections will be widespread. Not just urban population centers. And we will likely get back to overwhelmed health care system and increased death rate.

(10,193 posts)Took nearly a week to get results from the county health department. I'd been experiencing many of the COVID-19 symptoms for about a week before the test, but it looks like I only had a pretty bad chest cold, which is slowly improving. I had been staying home and following all the precautions before, now I'm being even more careful.

(10,884 posts)With an expert NIH attitude, the DFT administration rejected the test developed by the WHO, in favor of the one we haven't invented yet. We'll, now we have a number of different tests, some work, others don't. They all give statistically different results than the WHO tests.
Getting results in 7 days is unacceptable. Too many tests are available that can give results in less than on hour.
