(131,072 posts)Seems Joe Biden has won the primary, but chaos @ much of the state's AA voting precincts, huge waits, machines untested, didn't work, staff untrained.
Still voting, @ a nursing home. Featured on Lawrence show now.

(153 posts)Our state is the laughingstock of America for the fifth time this year. Or maybe it's the hundredth time. We tend to lose track. It's hot here.😔

(58,785 posts)during elections by denying the people the right to vote, doesn't actually make my list of concerns.
Not when government of the people, by the people, and for the people is on the line.
Blatant RW election thefts in Georgia are a bellweather for the nation, merely displaying most unmistakably what's happening everywhere the Republicans have the means to deny the will of the people. Let's hope people elsewhere are taking the warning sent by all those people enduring Georgia's pea-soup heat to have their say.

Voting absentee is another way to trip up Raffensberger and the GOP plot to stomp on democracy.

Somehow white districts had few problems, but machines + personnel in AA districts severely handicapped.

(46,159 posts)1. New machines (with paper trail) delivered, but
2. New poll workers never had training how to use them.
3. Veteran poll workers didn't show up en masse because of fear of the Virus.
4. Insufficient supply of provisional ballots.
5. Long lines at polls where the majority voters are African-American. Easy in/out for white polling stations.
6. Voting machines were not delivered to all precincts.

(32,717 posts)The pandemic has caused a lot of these problems. What's encouraging is that the turnout was great. But what is discouraging is that so many enthusiastic voters ignored the opportunity to use the mail-in ballot option. Therefore the few polling places that were open on election day were swamped with way too many people and not enough trained officials to manage the crowds.
Same thing happened in Pittsburgh. I live in the city Pittsburgh and I voted by mail. However I happened to drive past my neighborhood polling place last Tuesday and it was completely over-crowded. Several of the smaller polling centers had been closed because they didn't meet the Covid-19 standards for social distancing. Therefore a lot more people converged on the few polling stations that were allowed to open.
For us it's not a question of voter suppression. Our city is solid blue, and our county is probably 2/3 blue. Everyone who wanted to vote, got to vote. But it probably wasn't as convenient for everyone this time. So let's hope that more people get in the habit of using (or at least trying) the mail-in ballots by November.
