Washington — The Justice Department has sent Congress legislative recommendations that would expand the power of the courts as the nation grapples with the coronavirus pandemic that has brought daily life in the United States to a halt.

The proposals were sent to Capitol Hill at the request of lawmakers, who are currently working on major legislation to provide economic relief to Americans amid the coronavirus crisis, Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said Sunday. The measures were first reported by Politico, and CBS News has not been able to independently verify the content of the documents submitted to Congress.

According to Politico, one of the measures includes the ability to indefinitely detain people without trial during times of national emergency, like the one the nation is experiencing now. This could mean removing the right of habeas corpus, the ability of an individual charged with a crime to be brought before a judge and petition for release before trial.

This slope is laced with gallons of WD-40. I am appalled.

You know, the nearer your Constitution, the more you're slip slidin' away.

The playbook is wide open and they are actually taking us there. The future of that kind of stuff is a giant Trump statue in DC, his face on Mt. Rushmore and the end of our democracy all rolled into one. You can pretty much guess the rest. Maybe read up on 1984 for some tips.

Is the message they are sending now clear? Do we get it? This is for keeps.

We are voting for our lives in November.

People should be shaking in their boots.

The country will not survive four more years of this admin. Hell, we may not survive four more months...

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) excoriated a New York City judge

for purporting to revoke the writ of habeas corpus in response to widespread George Floyd protests late Thursday.
“Civil liberties protect ourselves from governments using ‘crises’ and ’emergencies’ as justification to dismantle our rights,” she said in response to the shocking news via Twitter. “This is suspension of habeas corpus, it is unconstitutional, and it is deeply disturbing that both NYPD is seeking it and a judge rubber stamped it.”

And tens of thousands of protestors called for their arrest and conviction, as though the trial were a formality and the presumption of innocence an offense against correct thinking.

Last time I know habeas corpus was actually suspended in the US was when President Lincoln did it with some Marylanders.

The court slapped him down, thankfully.

Now I'm curious as to whether there have been other cases, maybe under Wilson.
