Man, I miss George Carlin: "I leave symbols to the symbol minded."

I was thinking about that line today after seeing the Buffalo police hunker down to support the officers who assaulted the old man, just a day after kneeling with the protesters. As pictures of cops kneeling with protesters have circulated, I have been hella skeptical, thinking, "OK, I appreciate that, now what are you going to do to REALLY support black Americans and reform policing procedures?"

Symbols are for the symbol minded.

Reminds me of discussions that happen in workplaces about improving morale or climate in the office. Workers will offer things to make the actual job better: "Well, I mainly want to be respected more. I don't want to be talked down to by management. Better communication in the office would help. Personal leave to be with my family would be really nice." And you get back, "OK! What about a potluck?"
