Well, we are opening the dental practice fullbore on Monday.

Last edited Thu Jun 4, 2020, 09:51 PM - Edit history (1)

It will actually be my seventh week back to work in some capacity, I’ve been doing mostly emergencies and things which are brewing which will cause trouble shortly. But the hygienist are returning and elective work is permitted in Pennsylvania and our schedule filled almost immediately.

What I find very interesting is that the vast number of people implicitly trust us to do the right thing. Which we are. We have all that PPE equipment, air filtration, chemicals and everything else which is required for this. We have course will not utilize our waiting room the way we used to, people will wait outside or in a different place and once we have been advised of their arrival, we will call them and we will bring them directly into the dental chair. Five chairs no waiting. It takes somewhat longer to clean up the room and so obviously we will see fewer patients but I will tell you that it has actually become easier to practice because once again, people realize the value of the services I provide.

Now what is not being discussed is that the insurance companies have not been processing the claims in an appropriate manner so what many officers have done is bill the patients for the insurance fee in full at the time of the visit and get the reimbursement to the patients either directly or through the doctor. This has led to many fascinating discussions with long-term patients who are Appropriately quite upset at the new system, but even they understand the exigencies of the new normal.

Nothing is the same as it was four months ago in any respect in any aspect of our lives. I don’t know that this will be permanent but it has been a seachange and I believe that the sane middle of the road politically Is finally beginning to understand just how crazy the right wing is, and how destructive they are to the fabric of society. It took a triple crisis to get through to many of these people, but I think they’ve got it now. At least I hope and pray so, at least.

Here goes nothing...

I missed my scheduled cleaning and they gave me an appointment for the end of August. They have a lot of new rules too. Thanks for your helpful reply to my pm.

From 1972 to 1974 I didn't have a dentist and from 2016 to about 2018 I was in the same boat, both times I had moved. Both times I had to have some periodontal work done. No fun at all. However, they have got a lot better at it now. So, I'm on the 3 visits a year plan now and my insurance pays for it. 70 years old and have all of my own teeth and would like to keep them for the last 20.

Ever since I read an article in the Washington Post on this last week, I've been quite skittish about any visit to the hygienist.

We don’t deal with them

We breathe them in.

There’s an old joke about a guy who gets bitten , shall we say, in a bad place. The punch line is: Sam, you’re gonna die!

Yep. That’s how.

I guess it's time to call my dentist. At my January cleaning they found a cavity under an old gold crown. I went back and they did the prep for a permanent crown, which normally they can do in one visit. But the cavity had gone very close to the nerves and the dentist wanted to wait for the permanent crown to make sure I wouldn't need a root canal. So I have had a temporary crown since the beginning of February.

The good news is that I have had no problem with the tooth or the temporary, so I guess a root canal will not be needed. But I sort of miss the chance to watch my new crown being made on their cool machine right in the building! It uses water jets to shape the new crown, then they treat it with UV to harden it. I have a couple of other crowns made that way, and it was fun watching them being made.

You and your profession have a lot to deal with ... I had my checkup and cleaning last week, and, although I was a bit apprehensive at first, everything went smoothly and I felt comfortable with the precautions taken.

I just wish I had dental insurance!

the way I see it, they are in the business of being clean and I do trust them......and no, I still have not received a haircut

I'll check with my dentist regarding waiting protocol because no way can I sit out there in that Texas heat, even with AC it would suck

on edit, I love that you said BUILD THE PATIENCE instead of billed the patients.....in the context I do believe that may be a Freudian slip

I went today to have a permanent crown seated. Temp one had been on since February. I had to wait in the car and they came out to take my temp, have me answer some questions, and then finally to take me in. I had to wear a mask until I was in the room. Then I had to wash my hands and swish Listerine in my mouth for 45 seconds. (The first 30 seconds were fine, but the last 15 were quite uncomfortable and made me feel like I had fish lips.)

I learned that they change the plastic on everything and clean the rooms after every patient, which they’ve always done. Anyone they know to be high risk is tested... but it wasn’t clear to me how that works. They had to hire extra help to do all this cleaning and they see fewer patients because of the extra time it takes between them. Every clipboard and pen is cleaned after it goes out to a car. Every door knob is wiped down, etc. I’m sure you know the drill. But I sure felt better after finding out.

My cleaning and checkup were supposed to happen in May, but I put it off. Now I feel comfortable enough to go next week for that. They really are being super extra careful. And I’ll be the second patient of the day, after my husband. So that takes care of my fear of who was in the room before me.

This is one thing where I am not ok with going back so soon. I know that I will have to eventually but right now that's a no from me.
