JCpenney to close 154 of it's remaining 860 stores

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/04/jc-penney-announces-154-stores-set-to-close-this-summer-heres-the-full-list.html

Bankrupted J.C. Penney announced Thursday the list of the 154 stores it plans to close this summer, with store closing sales kicking off June 12.
It said it will announce additional closures in the coming weeks.
Penney said it expects the store closing sales to last anywhere from 10 to 16 weeks.

“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” Chief Executive Jill Soltau said in a statement.

Penney, like the many retailers deemed nonessential, was forced to temporarily close its stores due to the coronavirus pandemic, pushing it over the brink as its sales took an enormous hit and its debt swelled.

1. JC Penney and Sears are dying such a slow, painful death.

It is amazing how ineptly they missed the e-commerce train. Think of how well Sears could have transitioned its catalog into an original e-commerce site, long before Amazon took such a commanding lead.

I recall that amazon first knee capped the big book store chains (who had knee capped the independent book stores)

Sears was the best positioned in the nation to become the everything ecommerce store. Their incompetence and inability to adapt is why they're failing.

11. With a few small changes, a 1970s movie could be filmed inside SEARS. It's retro in so many ways

It’s tough to survive in normal times, but to close for 3+ months was it for them. Many others will follow until we have Walmart, Costco, grocery stores and amazon to chose from.

I just placed an order for my brother's birthday since the local store is obviously closed, fortunately not permanently.

Bend, Oregon, can support the last Blockbuster on earth, but Penney's can't make a go of it there.
