The slain man was identified as James Scurlock, 22. The white bar owner was reportedly in custody.

The county attorney said Scurlock had caused damage to the building housing Gardner’s bar before he was shot. Kleine said, “There was damage to property and Mr. Scurlock was killed.” He also said Scurlock had Gardner in a chokehold during a scuffle. He said social media rumors that Gardner had used a racial slur were deemed to be untrue. Kleine added, “I hope that this great community that we live in can get through this without disruption. This is the decision that we’ve made.”

I’d be in fear for my life if assaulted like that, too. No reason for violence, apart from defending oneself or others endangered by criminals.

About 35 years ago, I caught someone inside my car, a Fiero GT. At first, I thought it was a child playing race driver. When I got closer, I saw he had ripped the top of the steering column off and was hot-wiring the car. He saw me and jumped out. I was about to clobber him with my briefcase, but I saw it was a kid of about 14. I was stunned, stared in disbelief, and just let him run by. He then jumped into a huge car that had pulled up behind me. He jumped into an open door in the back and drove off. Two guys were in front.

I don’t think I’d be here today if I’d knocked him down. If I had and survived, I’d be angry for hitting a child.
