To try to discredit protests, protests also attract all kinds of people with their own grievances that may have nothing to do with the reason for the protest. You have to stop assuming everyone is acting through the lens of your own motivations. Some people are just pissed and want to rage against the machine. Do I think that's OK or justified? No i don't but i don't have to approve to recognize there are a LOT of people with legitimate grievances and when they see continuing injustice on whatever their issue is with no redress through official channels then some of them are going to take matters into their own hands.
It's objective observation of cause and effect with knowledge of human nature.

and there's often looting, which to my mind is no huge deal. Ugly and difficult, but not a big deal.

Much of the vandalism, it seems likely, is being deliberately done by MAGAt types. They want to make it seem like this is a riot. There are videos of protesters begging the white-male vandals to stop, and the question is, who are those guys.

Plus the man who drove up in an SUV and fired into a crowd of protesters, killing one? That sounds a lot like Charlottesville.

This tactic is as old as time. Some people think that burning it all down and then fighting for the remains is the only way to escape our current system.

This is the thought behind, "Politician X will be so bad that the whole country will wake up and start to agree with my proposed radical solutions." You may recall Susan Sarandon expressing ideas like this back in '16. People that say both parties are the same or that there's not a dime's worth of distance between the two major party candidates, or that talk about revolution all the time are exactly the type of people that see riots as an effective method of social change.
