Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on Friday evening denounced vandalism in her city as "chaos" after demonstrations over the death of George Floyd while in in the custody of Minneapolis police turned violent.
"What I see happening on the streets of Atlanta is not Atlanta. This is not a protest. This is not in the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. This is chaos," an impassioned Lance Bottoms said at a news conference.
"A protest has purpose. When Dr. King was assassinated, we didn't do this to our city," she said. "If you want change in America, go and register to vote. ... That is the change we need in this country."
The protests had started as peaceful Friday afternoon when crowds gathered in the city's famed Centennial Park. But by 6 p.m. ET, protesters began moving toward the front of the CNN Center, where police had gathered. Over the next few hours, the demonstration swelled as SWAT officers were called in to help with crowd control.

(31,261 posts)MAGATS get their way much more than they should because they make a habit of voting and never waste a vote. Our side have to "get excited" about candidates who reflect 95% of our values.
I am willing to venture a guess that a large number of the poeple protesting in the street have never bothered to register to vote.

PoC vote in higher percentages than anyone else. Let's not blame the victims shall we?

(31,261 posts)We just have too many people on our side who don't realize the power of voting. So what if republicans sweep registration lists, check the status of one's registration, reregister by the cutoff date and then vote in a way that the vote can't be easily negated.
We tend to see roadblock instead of barriers that we knock down and trample under our feet.

(54,770 posts)old District. It does work when we vote. Even in this rube state, anyone can vote by mail no matter how many polls they close.
And, from what I saw, Atlanta Police did a pretty good job last night by not making things worse.

Not safe for anyone, the protesters, the fire department, the shop owners, the residents, the police, the national guard. We are in the middle of a pandemic and this is not safe Andrew burning and looting has nothing to do with legitimate protest.

(2,059 posts)That's the problem though. Nothing ever changes. No real reforms are enacted. No real penalties are levied. No justice is ever served.
