NC governor: GOP has not submitted convention safety plans

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) said Thursday that Republican officials have not submitted the proposal his office has requested detailing how they plan to handle health risks at the planned Aug. 24 national convention, raising questions about whether President Trump will go through with his threat to pull the convention out of the state.

Trump has said that Cooper has until Tuesday to commit to allowing for a full in-person convention or he will consider holding the convention elsewhere.

Cooper said Thursday he’s open to allowing the convention to take place in a “safe way,” but that state health officials will first have to sign off on the convention plans to ensure they are in line with North Carolina’s coronavirus restrictions. “We’ve asked the RNC to submit plans to us, we’ve yet to receive any kind of plans,” Cooper said. “We’re not on any timeline here, we want to work with them and look forward to them submitting plans to us. We’ve yet to see them.”

Cooper said that on Thursday, North Carolina had experienced one of its highest days of deaths and hospitalizations since the outbreak first began. Republicans insist that they are moving ahead with plans for an in-person convention that would draw thousands to the Spectrum Center in Charlotte in late August.

It’s Trump’s plan not to have a convention and hang the blame for that on a Democratic governor of a swing state, rather than the circumstances created by the pandemic which are the real reason there won’t be traditional conventions for either party this year.

But if there's a written agreement to certain protocols, that gives the governor the power to shut the convention center down for the RNC's failure to follow the rules it agreed to.

for non-compliance would create an armed confrontation. These are Trump supporters after all.

I am torn between watching them try to find another venue between now and August, and letting them have their gathering so that most will be sick in time for the election.

He can draft an agreement that allows for an escalating set of penalties for noncompliance with the agreed-upon restrictions. That is, the convention wouldn't be shut down the first day because some yahoo wasn't wearing a mask. But as the violations pile up (and we both know they will), the penalties get tougher. Might be a good way to fund the state government for the next budget cycle.

Let's see if the GOP can arrange for a full-scale assembly of the Brown Shirts somewhere else, all the while managing the assorted logistical concerns associated with a mass gathering in just a couple of months.
