A video circulated on social media on Monday showed a woman in Central Park falsely claiming that an African-American man threatened her life.
The incident was said to occur between a man and a white woman over the Memorial Day weekend. Cell phone video shared on Twitter revealed a verbal confrontation as the woman was exercising her dog without a leash.
After the man asked the woman to put her dog on a leash, he took out his phone to film her.

(8,853 posts)...I'm wondering the same thing. Even before she threatened to call the police the man was filming her while she appeared (to me, at least) to be in the process of putting the leash on her dog. She looks up and sees him standing there filming her and she loses her shit. Frankly, I think that this wasn't good behavior on either of their parts. I'm not really convinced that he was filming just to show that her accusations were false since her was filming her before she made those accusations. He seemed to want to document the fact that her dog was off-leash. I would have walked away and filmed her from some distance rather than standing there with my camera trained on her like that. If her reaction had not been so racist or if the guy behind the camera had been white I think people might be more open to seeing the man's fault in this as well.
(shaking my examined head) listen to you. Sigh. This shit will never end.
skypilot
(8,853 posts)What will never end? I am not excusing her behavior. Her behavior was horrible but as a man I would never just stand there filming a lone woman like that.

(3,635 posts)and to document this repeat offender. According to reports on social media she was known to allow her dog unleashed, ignoring prior warnings.
She didn't like being called out (especially by a black man) and became enraged.

(8,853 posts)...it is the WAY he was recording. It would creep me out if I looked up and there was someone just standing there aiming their camera at me like that. I would have recorded her while walking away. And as I said in my post it did appear that she was in the process of leashing the dog at the beginning of the video. I know nothing about her repeat offender status. I am going by what I can see in the video.

(8,853 posts)If I were a woman (even a racist one) I'd be extremely uncomfortable if I looked up and saw a man of any race standing there filming me. I am not familiar with the area in the video and I don't know how many, if any, other people were around. I just didn't like anything about this video, including her racist reaction.

(2,023 posts)I doubt it. I'm sure he video'd her, but he didn't film her. Does anybody ever record anything on film any more? Does even Hollywood use film any more?
I'm sorry, but this is one of my pet peeves. Say "record her" or "video her" but not "film her" just because that's not what actually was happening.

(2,023 posts)The fact remains, there was no film in that cell phone, and saying he was "filming" the incident is an inaccurate description of what was actually happening.
I'm sorry if I'm being too literal, y'all, but this really is one of my pet peeves. It's like fingernails screeching across chalkboard to me. Usually I resist the temptation to say something, but this is one of those relatively rare instances when I failed to resist that temptation.
And I think that woman should be reported to the ASPCA or the Humane Society for the way she was choking that dog.

(6,591 posts)It's a pet peeve of mine too. It's like folks who say they got something "on tape." Really? On what tape format? HDCAM SR? DVCPro HD? Maybe something older like HD-D5 or DigiBeta?
Usually when folks say they "taped" someone what they really mean is they video recorded or audio recorded them, & no tape was involved.
Another pet peeve of mine is people who call a lower third overlay on a video screen a "chyron." It's a lower third. Chyron Corporation is a company that makes video hardware & software, & their products are often used to add lower thirds to video. "Chyron" is also a trademark.
Calling a lower third a "Chyron" is like calling a photocopy a "Xerox."
A photocopy is not a Xerox, Xerox is a company that sells products that make photocopies.
A lower third is not a Chyron, Chyron is a company that sells products that make lower thirds.
Pet peeve soapbox off!!!

YOU DON'T HAVE ANY EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY WHEN YOU ARE OUT IN PUBLIC!
Why is it so hard for people to understand that you can be, and are in some locales, almost constantly video recorded while outside?
Why is it that people seem to think that being recorded is somehow an invasion of their personal space or against the law?
It isn't, plain and simple. (Edit to add; UNLESS you are in your home or in place where a reasonable expectation of privacy exists, like a public bathroom, or your own bedroom, for instance)
And dopey dipshits like this lady just make America suck, that's all.

(9,952 posts)my area is so respectful and courteous with leashing dogs. I have a much more enjoyable walk because of it. Her handling of the dog was abusive too. Cops should come and she should then get a ticket, as it is on video.

Smart phones and social media have accelerated this trend. People are completely unaware of their surroundings, and when someone attempts to corral their behavior, it's seen as an attack on them.
TexasBushwhacker
(20,186 posts)No doubt she didn't see it that way, but she could have gotten a ticket for having her dog off leash, or it could have run away after another dog and gotten hurt. She should be arrested for making a false report.

(12,375 posts)You will more likely see rangers than cops but both are rare. Then you have another problem. They were at the edge of the ramble. Authority can drive there but being non-specific about where in the ramble, they could approach from anywhere and have difficulty finding her and the menacing black who was trying to do violence form about 75ft away from her.
Interesting thing, there are usually 4 or 5 people in that area at any time. Surprising that someone didn't come after hearing her nonsense.

Hes fine, thankfully. No I told him to be careful! As soon as she leashed the dog, he said thank you stopped filming and went about his business. This kind of entitlement dog walking happens weekly in the Ramble.

(210 posts)The escalation she puts in her voice when she's on the phone with the police is insane. Any operator hearing that would assume the man was actively attacking her, and the police would show up with guns drawn. She's effectively attempting to SWAT the guy for him asking her to put her dog on a leash, as posted.

(3,635 posts)and become enraged if called out on it. Such laws are about controlling those 'other people', you see, not 'decent American folk' like themselves.
Witness most of the social distancing tickets/arrests are against PoC even when whites are also congregating in parks beaches etc and the cops just pass by and wave at them. The whites who have been called out (by the cops/guards/others) tend to react badly.
