Coronavirus Case Counts in 50 States Indicate Vast Differences
All 50 states have now begun reopening, working to revive their economies after months of shutdowns designed to curb the coronavirus pandemic.
Most states are moving to reopen before they have met criteria set by the Trump administration such as a two-week decline in the number of new cases or in the percentage of Covid-19 tests that are positive. The administrations plan leaves the decision on when to reopen up to the governors. An examination of the cases and rates of increase shows how varied the circumstances of the pandemic have been as the states reopen.
The region where the first known U.S. cases of coronavirus were detected has had the most success in slowing new cases.
Washington, one of the first states to declare a state of emergency and shutdown, has seen flattening rates since mid-April. The state has set reopening standards for counties, requiring those with fewer than 10 new cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 residents over a 14-day span to move to phase two of the states four-phase reopening plan. Each phase will last at least three weeks.
