If Taiwan declares itself an independent nation what should the U.S. response be?

With Taiwan's president rejecting the One China policy what should the U.S. response be if Taiwan declares full independence and requests full U.N. membership? Should we recognize them and back their entry into the U.N or respect the One China policy? I think the U.S. should back Taiwan if they request it, they haven't so far, and support their membership into the U.N. The One China policy is nothing but political fiction, regard less of what the PRC says there are two Chinese nations in fact.

I wish we had stopped.the transfer of Hong Kong into the hands of the PRC. Look at what's happening there now. The Taiwanese need us now and we shouldn't abandon them to the brutality of the PRC. Trump won't do anything about it, though. He'll make one of his 'deals' with the Chinese and tell everybody the problem is solved. Meanwhile the Red Army marches into Taiwan.

We could actually make it worse by being to openly supportive. China could play it, or even perceive it as a US lead effort. I suspect that the US, under competent leadership, would play it as a "self determination" issue and "encourage" China and Taiwan to "work it out between themselves". Behind the scenes of course, there is alot they could do anywhere from getting the UN to take a lead, to spending alot of time sailing in the "open seas" areas between the two so that it interferes with China's ability to use military pressure on Taiwan.

We find a way to put trump in prison, and THEN we can go back to rattling our sabers.

1- We have a mutual defense treaty with Taiwan, meaning an attack on one is an attack on both.
2- China has said that a Taiwan Declaration of Independence would be considered an act of war and would trigger an immediate invasion.

1 + 2 = bad shit

I don't think so! China wouldn't allow it, and its the last thing we need.
