Captain of Mayport-based USS Philippine Sea relieved of command

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The captain of the USS Philippine Sea, a guided missile cruiser based at Naval Station Mayport, was relieved of her command Monday, according to the U.S. Navy.

In a statement, the Navy said Capt. Erica Hoffman was removed from her post due to a “loss of confidence in her ability to command,” but no additional details were provided.

A Navy spokeswoman said in an email Tuesday that a command investigation was conducted prior to Hoffman’s removal but noted the investigation was under review.

“ The move comes more than a week after the Philippine Sea spilled 4,000 gallons of fuel into the York River in Virginia, according to the Associated Press. It’s unclear if the spill had anything to do with the decision.”

YORKTOWN, Virginia -- A large warship spilled 4,000 gallons of fuel into a Virginia river late last week, the U.S. Navy has confirmed.

The USS Philippine Sea, a guided-missile cruiser, spilled the diesel fuel into the York River on Thursday morning, WAVY-TV reported Monday.

The Captain of a ship, has great power over the running the ship, but is also responsible for everything that happens, or should happen and doesn't on their ship.

If the captain actually ordered the dumping, it is their fault. If the XO ordered the dumping, it is the captain's fault, If a 18 year old kid opened the wrong valve, it is the captain's fault because the kid wasn't trained properly. If a pipe broke, it is the captain's fault that it was not properly maintained. The Buck always stops on the Captain's desk. Every captain that accepts a command knows that up front. It may not always be fair, but it is a very effective system.

My skipper nearly lost his job over slamming into a pier in Pearl Harbor when the tug's tow cable snapped...in all practical terms it wasn't his fault, but the captain is the captain is the captain.
