(14,855 posts)Totally different story at my Dayton suburb.
Keep an eye on the locations of new outbreaks in the coming weeks, folks.
Edit: I'm not far from Miami County OH (home of John Boehner), so that might be more representative of the attitudes at my suburb.

(65,076 posts)I think it was Thursday. Went shopping for my wife. Everybody(!) was masked.
It's a small town, so there were probably a dozen customers and 8 or 10 workers at that time.
But all masks, and distancing was very well done.

(3,741 posts)but they never will know who said it because everyone will be masked. LOL Never put yourself in harms way because these covidiots are also trumpividiots and they will lash out against any truthful persons

(14,887 posts)I do almost all my grocery shopping online. I wear a mask and gloves when the bags are delivered, as does the delivery person. Mask and gloves stay on until plastic containers (cottage cheese, yogurt, hummus) and glass jars (pickles, pasta sauce) are wiped down.
My son works at Trader Joe's and does some shopping for me. He usually goes home and showers and changes before he comes over with supplies. He wears a mask the entire time he is here.
I miss giving him a hug when he leaves.

Everyone was masked at the large grocery store 5 min.from my house about 2 weeks ago. I was astonished
Last time I was there last Thursday Id say 85 - 90% masked
Down the road at Walmart same day it was 50-50 but every employee was masked.
Ms. Toad
(34,075 posts)but not Saturday (the masked were down to about 10%).

(49,007 posts)You get about 2%. That's a doubling of active cases every 35 days.
Places like Brazil are running about 11% New/Active. That doubles in 7 days.
Based on a one day observation (better would be 3-day running average), Minnesota is 18% (doubling time 4 days). Wisconsin is 9%+. North Carolina is nearly 8%. Mississippi 7%. Texas is a little under 5%. Virginia 4%.
The PEOPLE of the US are doing it. No help from Greed Over People or the orange virus in the White House.

(65,174 posts)My area of Montgomery County, PA has been very responsible.
Masks are required here, so that helps. I only remember seeing one customer let in without a mask.

(17,931 posts)Same here in Vermont. At least my part of it. Most folks wear masks in the grocery. Most of those who don't are college age kids, still in the "i'm immortal!" phase.

Practice the guidelines and live a little.

(5,477 posts)Supermarkets, yeah probably about 75% compliance. But convenience stores/ gas stations about 10%.
My workplace, deemed "essential", masks are voluntary. About 20% compliance. Social distancing? HA!
A LOT of young people must think they are immune.
Sad.
Idiots not wearing masks are going to be shocked when the boomerang hits in a couple of months. Millions of new infections.
Welcome to the Trump Plague and the Trump Depression.

(15,325 posts)Most grocery stores have about 50/50. Some less. But when I walked thru Whole Foods everyone had a mask on.
Granted, at the doorfront they wipe carts & have an attendant offering gloves, hand sanitizer & masks.
I was relieved & suprised & actually felt a bit safer being there. I was quite proud of all who cared enough to take the time to protect themselves & others.
Even the dad with his daughter (she was probably 6/7) were both wearing masks. Hers was pink!

(7,633 posts)It's laziness ...
...or just plain forgetfulness or lack of access to those damned masks.
....and while I'm damning things I must say, they were damn hard to find here until just this week. Still can't find toilet paper or my favorite countertop and stove top cleaner; Fantastic. Yeah, I use vinegar alot and Dawn too but that stuff works better than the 409 as a final wipe down, I think.
This whole scene is just unreal. If you'd told me a year ago a plague would shut down, not just this nation, but the entire world...
Maybe many years and mutations from now some stone age tribe will wander out of the jungle to find the world they've inherited.

(25,380 posts)As soon as things started shutting down, I said to hubby, "Could you ever have imagined this?"
It's more bizarre than 911, Jim Jones, Charles Manson, Trump elected or anything we could have imagined...
I guess a bad nuclear accident could have beat this....

(7,263 posts)You cannot go into any supermarket in the area without a mask. Governor Wolfe ASKED us to do it...no laws, no fines...but laid out the facts that it is the right thing to do and the vast majority in Western PA are listening.
There is a reason we are still called the Steel City, even though that train left decades ago.

(2,412 posts)Excellent, we need more of this. I live by a park in Portland Oregon and few people are wearing masks. An unmasked runner ran right into my face as I was entering my car. They could have moved to the street but were selfish. I yelled at them. I had a mask on, but still the stream of their air was right in my face. Many many people on the sidewalk here running and walking with no mask, and dogs on the loose. Dogs can get COVID too and spread it! I guess mask wearing is just not cool in Portland. I thought people here knew better.

(5,725 posts)So many coworkers have decided that the virus can't pass through security, so once they're inside they don't need a mask. It's so bad we all just got an e-mail reminding us it's a requirement and anyone caught out-of-compliance gets cited and fined.
I'm cool with that. Idiots in the breakroom have been clustered together, unmasked, baying their fool heads off at each other while playing dominoes and cards. Surprised we're not all dead--especially since for a lot of the guys hand-washing protocol goes like this:
1. Wet hands
2. BEAT UP THE SOAP DISPENSER OR THEY'LL THINK YOU'RE A GIRL
3. Immediately place hands under running water, washing 95% of completely-wasted soap down drain
4. Rub hands lightly for a few seconds
5. BEAT UP THE TOWEL DISPENSER OR THEY'LL THINK YOU'RE A CUCK
6. Complain that towel dispenser is broken for some reason, go to other dispenser
7. Knock out five yards of paper towel, wipe hands, throw away four and a half yards of dry paper
...or like this:
1. Use toilet
2. Wipe ass (optional)
3. Zip up
4. Stride past sinks without washing up, SOAP IS FOR F**S
5. Lunchtime!

(5,725 posts)...similar to these. The more-insecure gentlemen will rapidly and loudly smack the paddles with the bottom of their fists. While a single press of the soap dispenser gives one all the soap one needs and four pushes will provide plenty of paper towel, you can hear BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM!! coming from the men's room throughout the day and there's always at least one dispenser broken.

(48,955 posts)was extended (we were tagged in study as possible emerging hot spot at the end of April). But moved in to 'beginning to open up' as of Friday pm.
Other parts of the state have seen protests and the culture wars arise around things like masks. But no evidence of it here at the grocery story this morning.

(6,593 posts)And I'd LOVE to have those words printed on my masks. But this area of WI is up to the eyeballs in rednecks and deplorables who would openly follow me home and then come back at midnight with a pack of matches and a gas can. Free country my ass, I can't even have campaign signs in front of the house, for the same reason.
That's why I never miss a chance to vote.

(31,261 posts)On my way out the store a guy standing at the door raised his hand. I thought he was motioning toward me, so I slowed as I approached him. But he looked at something, took it in his hand and clicked it as I passed. I don't know exactly what was happening, but he was taking a count of something. I had on a mask. It wasn't until a while later did I realized that I noticed a person at the opposite exit (near where I entered the store) doing something on the exit of that end of the store.
I had to follow the signs on the floor, and I got my power strip. Of course, I didn't need a toaster, so that's that.

(14,855 posts)... according to this website:
https://covidactnow.org/
I don't really know if it's accurate. Supposedly the infection growth rates for these counties...
Cuyahoga (Cleveland): 1.06
Montgomery (Dayton): 1.18
Miami: 1.40 (High)
I live in a North Dayton suburb, but it's close to Miami County. And I think many of the shoppers at my local grocery store drive from there (John Boehner country), and almost none of them are wearing masks from what I've seen during grocery pick-ups.

(5,734 posts)I want to give a shout out to Mesa County, Colorado. Even though a majority are conservative, I am seeing more and more people with masks, rather than fewer! Gloves, also. And even those without masks are being very cooperative at social distancing. Everyone I have met in any store is extremely polite. No stupid assault rifles, even though this area has a lot of gun ownership; no loud protesters. I hope we can all keep this up at stay at 51 cases and no deaths. Big county, thousands of people. Vigilance, not vigilantes!

(346 posts)Meanwhile, here in rural Missouri, my stores are so crowded and I bet not even 5% are wearing masks. We only have 8 recovered cases in my county, so everyone thinks it is ok to do what they want. Everything is opening back up the last couple of weeks and it is like a ticking time bomb! lol It scares me every time I have to get out for anything!
