FLIPPABLE: Melissa Romano for MT State Supt. of Education

Melissa Romano is a collaborative leader and problem solver in and outside of her classroom. Having worked as an educator for more than 15 years, Romano is a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s “Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), and the 2018 Montana Teacher of the Year, acknowledging her accomplishments as a second grade teacher, kindergarten teacher and Instructional K-8 Mathematics Coach. ​

Romano’s expertise at a local and national level earned her a position as a Master Teacher with BetterLesson, a website devoted to highlighting and sharing best teaching practices. As one of the 130 educators chosen, Romano understands the importance of unifying teachers and resources in order to increase student achievement.

In Helena, Romano served as a facilitator of a Helena School District elementary mathematics support group, focused on developing students’ mathematical disposition. She served a three year term on the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics where she served as President. Romano also served as a board member for the Montana Learning Center, an independent, non-profit facility near Helena, dedicated to the advancement of learning and teaching mathematics and science. She also served on the Smarter Balanced State Network of Educators for Montana.

On a national level, along with her recent recognition by the National Science Foundation for her achievements, Romano participated in the National Education Association Common Core Working Group, helping to ensure that local guidance, insight and expertise is incorporated into the implementation of nation-wide education standards. Romano was also selected to work with educators throughout America as a juror and evaluator for the Educators Evaluating the Quality of Instructional Products with Achieve, an independent organization dedicated to working with states to raise standards.

Romano earned her B.A. in science and her M.S. in elementary education from the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut). She is a certified elementary school teacher in the State of Montana. She lives in Helena, Montana, along with her husband and four children.
