We just watched the movie "A Bridge Too Far"

from 1977, about a plan in WWII that did not work out. Long movie, amazing cast, not cheerful
Very impressive that it required a lot of planes and people. Way before CGI.

Today, when Dr. Fauci said trying to get vaccine and to the people to open schools in August, was a bridge too far, I was glad I had just seen it and understood the reference.

he participated in the invasion of Okinawa, Iwo Jima and was part of the Occupation, he hated the Japanese and anything made in Japan to the day he died.

I have no ill will towards anyone, but I can understand his hatred and contempt towards the Japanese.

podcast series out now about Japan and the Pacific war theatre in WWII. It is free to download at present. MASSIVE episodes, 3 so far, each is over 4 hours long.

Carlin is a superb history podcaster, the best on the planet, or close.

Supernova in the East

Hardcore History 62 – Supernova in the East I

The Asia-Pacific War of 1937-1945 has deep roots. It also involves a Japanese society that's been called one of the most distinctive on Earth. If there were a Japanese version of Captain America, this would be his origin story.

Hardcore History 63 – Supernova in the East II

Deep themes run through this show, with allegations of Japanese war crimes and atrocities in China at the start leading to eerily familiar, almost modern questions over how the world should respond. And then Dec 7, 1941 arrives...

Hardcore History 64 – Supernova in the East III

Japan's rising sun goes supernova and engulfs a huge area of Asia and the Pacific. A war without mercy begins to develop infusing the whole conflict with a savage vibe.

His terse comment about occupation duty in Berlin: he never met a German who had been a Nazi

He did not raise us on hate, though. My mother, who lost her high school sweetheart in the war (before dad) was not very forgiving of the Germans

After trump, I’ve forgiven everyone

released. Another great one from back then is Cross of Iron. James Coburn and Maximillian Schell. Great action and they even had a couple real vintage Russian tanks.

comparison with Trump today. Patton was a wartime general who understood risk and went around with pistols on him as a safety precaution and Trump, delusionally, thinks he is a wartime leader scared to wear a mask to show the country he understands risks and will take safety precautions.

It's a big epic movie done right.

And (eventually) it kind of blew my mind when I recognized one of the US soldiers as a young John Ratznberger.

and the actual battle occurred. They still have a yearly celebration there to commemorate this event, with large numbers of Brit veterans and Netherlands survivors on hand. Don't ever think that things like this go unremarked or unappreciated... Good on Dr. Fauci too...
