This is what happens to the pets left behind when their owners die from coronavirus

Excerpt from mid-article:

Now, some shelters are beginning to see an increase in pets who have become homeless after their owners died during a pandemic.

"It was an almost creepy silence," said Tiffany Lacey, executive director of Animal Haven, a New York City animal rescue. "My worry was always, where are the animals? What's going on?"

Lacey said it took "about a week or two" before the shelter started receiving calls about people dying and animals being left behind.

"We knew what was going to happen, and it slowly started to trickle and now the ball is rolling down the hill faster," Lacey said.

Among those who came to Animal Haven: Bo, a 10-year-old blind and deaf pug. The spry senior pug was fed three homemade meals a day from his owner, who cared for him since he was a puppy, Lacey said.

But when Bo's owner died from Covid-19, family members didn't know what to do with him. No one could take him in permanently. They considered euthanizing him because of his age. Instead, he was brought to Animal Haven, which now has more than 30 dogs and cats who have lost their families to coronavirus.

"Something so sad that's happening right now is the amount of people who don't have that safety net at all, whether it's family or friends" to take their pets, Lacey said.

makes sense being that more people are at home now, and desiring companions. Hopefully this trend is continuing (the adoptions).

I have 2 friends who love Othello and would take him ,if the unthinkable happened. I covered my ass since I got risk factors. My 1 freind who does check ins already, and feeding when I go to the hospital for emergencies I am sure would look after him until I got better or not.

Othello saved my life, I owe him mine. He's my companion, and therapy cat. I cannot let him suffer and die alone.

I'd kill myself if he died that way when I could have prevented it. I adore Othello and owe him my life.

Contengincy pet plans with people you know and trust and who are willing to adopt your pet if you can't be there because they know and love your pet too is the best of all worlds.

I have to be nice to my daughter at all times, because she would happily bump me off to get possession of my two dogs. 😳🐶🐶

Many shelters managed to adopt out their cats and dogs as people stuck at home appreciated the companionship.

As workplaces open up, as "work-from-home" is discouraged in favor of the team environment of the office, as factories open and there is no "work-from-home" on the factory floor, then newly-adopted pets will be newly-abandoned in droves.

I'll continue to donate to my local shelters. They're gonna need it.
