Trump is old enough he should remember the wonderful 50s, spy vs. spy, Gary Powers and the U2, "We will bury you!", fallout shelters, duck and cover, etc.
Armed with that knowledge, an intelligent person can extrapolate that known Russian nationals and their associates are going to be closely watched in the United States. And having made that leap, it's only a tiny hop for that intelligent person to realize that anyone who is in frequent contact with those Russians, et al, have themselves become worthy of increased scrutiny.
