A nine-person team arrived in Gallup late April and has been working with the Navajo Nation since, said aid worker Jean Stowell, who heads the organization's US Covid-19 response team. The team expects to remain there until June.
The Navajo Nation is the largest US Indian tribe and its capital lies about 25 miles northwest of Gallup, according to the New Mexico Tourism Department.

"Historically, the Navajo Nation has not received the same attention and resources as other communities in the US, and that has made it particularly difficult for them to respond to this unprecedented epidemic," Stowell said.
"The leadership of the Navajo Nation as well as the Indian Health Service welcomed our support, and we are happy to join them and other non-governmental organizations working to control the outbreak in this community," she said.

(149,620 posts)They have done great work all around the world, and now they're helping our own Native People.
It makes me sad that we cannot take care of our own, but there is no will for it, esp. with the administration we now are occupied by.

(7,286 posts)Clearly the pandemic is overwhelming their clinics there. It would overwhelm any healthcare system
Elsewhere across the country IHS providers are doing what they do
I know for a fact, in our district the clinics are fighting the good fight under very difficult circumstances. The clinics are staffed by hard working and dedicated providers and are very well managed
Our clinic is in an area considered frontier medicine by Medicare. The staff and Natives are somewhat accustomed to hardships. We just had to ramp it up for the pandemic. I work with heroes from housekeeping to administrative everyone pitched in

(19,201 posts)They can use all the help they can get. Once again the indigenous people of this country are forgotten by the government that promised them the world for their land. Our government always screws over the Native Americans, and I'm sick of it!
DWB does so much good work all over the world, and I'm so happy they're helping the Navajos.
