There are way too many stupid Americans to be able to reopen the economy safety. You say reopen to the millions of idiots in our country and they hear go back to normal. They are not wearing masks, they are not social distancing. They actually get mad at businesses that are trying to reopen correctly, safely.
The virus will continue to spread, the death toll will continue to rise. Places that are tying to reopen will have to shut down again. Many of our major industries will not be able to open until there is a vaccine. We are heading for a major, long lasting, economic catastrophe.

Even GW Bush could talk to the people.

a new low for them--at least the previous GOPee actor in the White House was able to convincingly feign empathy.

(70,559 posts)Michael Osterholm @ the University of Minnesota is the go to man on the subject.
"The steps we will recommend will be based on our current reality and the best available data," ead the preface from CIDRAP Director Michael Osterholm. "Our goal is to help planners envision some of the situations that might present themselves later this year or next year so that they can take key steps now, while theres still time."
The first report reflects on the COVID-19 pandemic so far and compares it to pandemics of the past, such as the 1918 Spanish flu. By looking at behavior patterns from past influenza outbreaks, CIDRAP experts believe the coronavirus pandemic may last 18 to 24 months. In the new report, CIDRAP outlined three possible scenarios.

(811 posts)It will also hurt the smart and good people who can't afford to stay home. Many of us are fortunate to be able to work at home indefinitely and only go out when absolutely necessary. Many more people rely on minimum wage or low wage jobs to support themselves and their families and must get back to work before it's safe to do so. That's one of the the saddest things of all. The Trumpist idiots are making their own ill-informed choices, but others don't have those options. I'm just glad I live in California where our governor is really trying to do the right thing.

So the idiot not having a mask will disperse in aerosol the virus
which only a N95 mask can stop.
The percent of asymtomatic people is on the rise as we get better and more testing.
These are the one most needed to wear a mask.

(16,120 posts)I've read several articles about this; here's one of them:
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/04/will-there-be-a-coronavirus-vaccine-maybe-not.html
Here's another: https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2020-04-17/coronavirus-vaccine-ian-frazer/12146616
Professor Frazer was involved in the successful development of the vaccine for the human papilloma virus which causes cervical cancer a vaccine which took years of work to develop.
He said the challenge is that coronaviruses have historically been hard to make safe vaccines for, partly because the virus infects the upper respiratory tract, which our immune system isn't great at protecting.
And while we have vaccines for seasonal influenza, HPV and other diseases, creating a new vaccine isn't as simple as taking an existing one and swapping the viruses, said Larisa Labzin, an immunologist from the University of Queensland.
"For each virus or different bacterium that causes a disease, we need a different vaccine because the immune response that's mounted is different," Dr Labzin told ABC Science.

(14,820 posts)Cause a disruption in life critical resources - like food, water, and electricity. Ration them to to friendlies and restrict them to critics. Purge the unwanted populations.
Start over.
That actually is a stated plan in some circles, and it appears to be one that is actually being carried out, though luckily not efficiently or with competent managers. At least not yet.

(6,843 posts)I guess they thought that infected people left virus in their tracks. We are told that the virus cannot stand exposure of more than a few days? hours? minutes? Was their effort a waste of time and energy? Was street spraying a step too far? I haven't heard.
I do, however, expect to hear that the White House is a new hot spot for infection. That would be a bit of news which makes perfect sense.

(10,749 posts)That picture from the restaurant in San Antonio last week and the TJ Maxx in Arkansas this weekend are horrifying.
The US is going to hit 80,000 Covid-19 deaths today, and you know full well we're never going to get the truth about infections in the White House.
You know how people say that things are going to get worse before they get better? It's a popular line in sci fi and horror movies. I'm increasingly getting the feeling that it's going to get worse. And worse. And worse. And he'll still poll at 40%+. And Republican politicians will still remain silent.

Compared to that, the obsession with monetary losses seems inappropriate.

(2,595 posts)forgotten the old adage,an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I have read that if 80% of the population wore masks, the number of cases would plummet. In Japan, they did not need to shut down to the extend that we did because they respect their fellow citizens and wear masks. Maybe it has something to do with how homogeneous a society they are. This same principle applies to global warming. We need leadership.

Singapore is in trouble. If those countries are having a tough time it's almost impossible in america where some days people can't agree on the weather.

(5,641 posts)Super busy and while there were people still wearing masks, it was a lot less than before.
The amount of traffic and people congregating was incredible. We just drove around a bit and dropped off some mail, then went home, dismayed at the foolishness.
While our numbers here are not outrageous, yet, with this level of a lack of concern we fear it will jump again soon.
