It's a small sample, so take it with a grain of salt, but there's been a lot of speculation that some of the most severe cases could be tied to a person's viral load. If that's the case, this new treatment could end up saving a lot of lives.

(5,164 posts)I read someones tweet who had it a couple of months ago- she said she went to the emergency room with breathing problems and pneumonia, denied a test 3 x. she was admitted and they gave her 2 antiviral drugs and she got better in two days. She finally was tested positive then.
When I was diagnosed with pneumonia at the field hospital four weeks ago my doctor had told me to go there because they were giving people hydroxy chloroquine and the earlier you get treatment the better.
But when I got there they said only if youre bad enough to be in the hospital with low pulse ox etc. I had already started Z pack because I have that at home. I talked with her after she reviewed the x-rays and she said it looks like covid pneumonia.
I asked her can you give me some antivirals to stop it from getting more severe, she was saying she cant do that it is so hard to prescribe them at home etc. so I had to go through 2-3 weeks worrying if Im going to get so severe and die etc. I had to monitor myself constantly and be in touch with her. I am still recovering from it all after 4 weeks now.
Basically they were saying theyre gonna let you get to the point where you are almost dead almost no treatment before that if you are not in hospital.

(5,164 posts)It has been the most stressful thing maybe ever for me and I have been through several life threatening health crises. I just hope my back pain reduces. I am still having back pain I dont know if its from the pneumonia anymore or something else causing it as well.

(44,974 posts)Remdesivir is only approved for those with severe covid.
I don't like the idea of having to be nearly dead before being admitted to a hospital either.

(5,164 posts)Some people were getting them anyway when they went to the hospital and were bad enough to be treated even only briefly, it helped them. So why wait around until youre almost dead and have to be on a ventilator etc. I also wonder how many people ordered it themselves or got a doctor to prescribe it somehow and it helped them. We are never going to know.

(11,348 posts)let's please not be promoting the idea that people should "order" drugs and prescribe for themselves. This is seriously bad advice. Let your doctor do the prescribing. Please.
my doctors have made very serious errors numerous times with me and with family members, causing fatality in one case and close to it with me. They will never have my complete trust again, not that they ever did really because I question most of what they say. And if Im going to be left to die which is basically what could have happened here I will find a way to get what I need. I have already ordered meds for my kitties that way and family members have done it for themselves to avoid the exorbitant costs.

(11,348 posts)But I think you are making a PROFOUND mistake in trying to influence others to follow your course.
(if in fact that is what you propose.)

(11,348 posts)I probably know 15 people currently that are convinced that they've "already had it." (very unlikely, by the way!) Now imagine if all those misguided souls are running around trying to get their hands on dangerous items such as chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, and Remdesivir? (and god knows what else they've heard about on the internet!) You may have some idea of what you are doing. I can assure you that a lot of people out there do NOT!

(5,164 posts)Its a realistic perspective if youre not going to get any treatment, the solution is to stop denying the average people treatment and start getting better treatments now. I would not assume those people didnt have it, kind of a strange assumption on your part considering what we know. I will say again, I wasnt encouraging anybody to do anything Im not sure why you attached to that notion like glue.

(35,445 posts)Because there does not seem to be any international coordination in this fight nor is there information sharing nor is there some sort of international framework for evaluating new remedies or vaccines, all we are left with are these new stories tauting the latest cure or discovery or new hope without the new discovery being subjected to an international standard.
But, it hits the news. it hits social media. There's a splashy headline, and then poof! Nothing. We never hear about it again.
