Eight years ago on DU - The thought of whether we would deal with a pandemic

I'm watching Contagion- Its eerie - that so many things playing out now were in that movie.
I was searching for a recent thread to comment on the movie and found this thread from 8 yrs ago.

One person called the movie propaganda
Not trying to bash people on the thread - Life is so unpredictable. If someone tried to tell us about a coming pandemic 10 yrs ago, and that the response would be so disastrous, most of us would not believe.
Similarly, if you told us 10 yrs ago, no one would have believed Donald Trump would be president.

... at a pandemic.

Trump as President? I definitely would've thought THAT was crazy!

Now, because of Trump, I have to consider the possibility of the "Duck Dynasty" guys being in the White House someday. That doesn't seem quite so crazy to me anymore, although it SHOULD.

Both of them are playing to the crazy that has taken over the Republican Party.

I no longer believe that Americans at large will reject a total incompetent. If a person spews out bs that strikes the fancy of a fairly large number of Americans, they will ignore all the flashing warning signs.

It is only a major epidemic or pandemic that will stop these morons runningn the country
That is why sensible countries tax everyone o for the common good and public health is number one.

South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan in Asia, strong science based decision making had an enormous positive impact on how effective they were at handling the virus. We just have a piss-poor person leading this country right now, he prefers to stoke division rather that set a policy that gets us out of this situation without enormous damage done to our society.
