The entire adminstration is willing to risk the lives of the American people either through unneccesary exposures to the virus and/or withholding federal assistance to the unemployed.

The only thing that matters to this administration is Trump's sagging poll numbers, so everything has to have a positive spin. That means, less testing, downplaying the number of deaths, forcing states to open, fudging the data on the struggles of the economy, constant happy talk, and accusing any critic of being biased against Trump.

Our very civilization will edge closer and closer to complete collapse while Trump is president.

5. Except, you can not hide the illness and death

I think he is gambling on the virus naturally becoming less contagious in the summer, like both the flu and the common cold. In addition, he would hope that it is mid November when it resurfaced.

This is very likely a long shot, but that must be that his team rejected more prudent paths because they are bad for him politically. Consider that the medical experts DID put recommendations on how to reopen together ... And he tried to hide them.

I suspect that he does not want to follow that much slower path because he thinks the economic damage might be too great. Also, it might give weight to the recommendations that Trump blew off for 2 months. Given the exponential path cases were on then, every week he delayed before recommending action, allowed us to move UP that curve, meaning that even as we flattened the curve the numbers were far higher than they would have been had action been taken earlier. Then consider that when the curve started to flatten it was because of the action of governors in hard hit states. Even now, there is little or no federal action.

He might see his only chance being seen as the man brave enough to call an end to hiding from the virus and making America Great Again! No one ever said he used logic as the basis of decisions. He will face 2 problems with this, more than a majority of people say they will still stay home and, sadly, it is far more likely that more people will die. Even the WH model's expectation of the number of deaths greatly increased with his call to start opening making it clear that his call was in spite those projections!

Add to this that part of the problem may be that Trump will not listen to experts. His comments on Katie Miller's tests show he may understand less than most adults, with no briefings.

The smartest thing that Trump can do is beg MAGATS to wear face masks, even tell them the best ones to use and show them how to wear them. But that won't happen.
As the dead keep mounting, marginally pro-Trump people will leave him. By doing what he is chosing to do, he is planting the seeds for his defeat in November.

Trump had a chance to be a hero and insure re-election by limiting the damage the virus could do here. He blew that chance with his lack of focus and his calling it a hoax.

He is trapped with the virus slowly surrounding him, figuratively and literally.
