Lack of convenience doesn't equal oppression.

(12,712 posts)It just might.
In a culture that is steeped in materialism and the idea of growth, these many decades of commercialism has steeped many people in a consumer mindset. In that case, those who take it to heart as the essence of their reality might then equate lack of convenience with oppression, especially if they lack the capacity to do verbal insertions that circumvent that drive.
For instance, I recall a time when the common term for a member of our collective of individuals was citizen. How often do we hear that today? Now, the term is consumer and even government services are referred to as products, etc. When you repeat something long enough, some people tend to believe it to the point that they conflate it with reality itself.
In a sense, the capitalistic, Neo-Liberal model has served to fashion people, especially those who won't or can't think for themselves, into consumers of mass quantities. It's a fix. The monkey is on their back. They want their rightful goods and services. NOW! There is shaking, sweating and gnashing of teeth.
Even though there is now a significant difference between a conservative of yore and the republican of today, this still applies here:
Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative.
