Christian case for Trump is thin indeed

John S Gardner
Published on Sun 10 May 2020 02.00 EDT

... Trump “bounded on stage to the thumping strains of ‘Money, money, money’ from For the Love of Money, a song by the 70s soul group the O’Jays”.

On the page and off, Reed is usually quick to provide apposite quotes from the scriptures. In a book that is part history of the 2016 campaign, part apologia, part work of political theory, and part political shell game, he chooses not to include here 1 Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is the root of all evil” ...

Reed’s reliance on the “teaching of Jesus about the difference between words and works” is misplaced. He writes: “I measure a man more by his actions than by the occasional rash or ill-advised word.” How about false? Allegedly defamatory? Demeaning? Belittling? Racist?

And this: “I have learned to be suspicious of the smooth talker who never delivers.”

As have those who plumped down money for Trump University ...

that I probably otherwise would be.

The whole religion is based on the idea of emulating someone who was willing to be tortured and executed for the sake of other people (who really didn't deserve that level of consideration).

I think this is more of an Evangelical or Fundamentalist problem in essence and it is being used, of course, to manipulate more gullible people, (I am not denigrating them here) who have a stronger tendency to believe as opposed to knowing.

The term, "Christian" is really a blanket term and Christianity has divisions and sects. In America, we may tend to lump it all together, which, in a sense, works for the theocratic Evangelists who are extreme fundamentalist literalness, to but it succinctly.

I use the term, "McChristian". It is a fast food form of the religion with Jesus at the drive-up window handing out the goodies. It goes right along with a materialistic, consumerism mentality and so, it is way off the rails and has strayed far from the original tenets. Televangelists and the prosperity gospel churches are good examples of how much it has been distorted and made to fit a capitalist model.

Benjamin L. Corey

I grew up in the rapture-me-outta-here end times movement, and have spilled no shortage of ink critiquing it– even poking a bit of fun at it. As a theologian I fall into a category of belief that sees biblical prophecies about “the end” as being events that have mostly been fulfilled in the past, but I try to hold that belief gently and recognize I could be wrong.

Here are the no-kidding-not-satire-prophecies and signs of the antichrist the Bible tells us to watch out for… and that blew my mind by the time I was done:

The Antichrist will be a man who is exceptionally arrogant and will be known for giving boastful speeches.

“I could hear his boastful speech…”
Daniel 7:8, Revelation 13:5
So, as you keep your eyes peeled for the Antichrist, be sure to keep in mind that it won’t be a quiet leader who is deceitfully humble and flies under the radar– The Bible says it will be someone who loves to give speeches where he boasts about himself.

The Antichrist will make fake news popular and will be a chronic liar. His followers will believe his delusions because they hate the truth.

“He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior… He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.”
Daniel 8:25, 2 Thess 2:10

Daniel 8 and 2nd Thessalonians 2 are incredibly descriptive warnings to help us recognize the Antichrist. Predicting that under his rule “deceit will prosper” warns us to look for someone who calls the truth “fake news” and who is known for constantly lying.

In fact, the Antichrist lies so much that the Bible stops calling him the Antichrist and starts calling him The Liar– using the definite article for effect– as if he begins to personify fake news and lies.
