The popular saying "April showers bring May flowers" might not be the case this year. The northeastern United States is experiencing an unusual Mother's Day weekend as most restaurants remain closed amid coronavirus concerns and a historic polar vortex packing snow shatters temperature records.

Along the Montlake Cut, swimmers Saturday basked in sunshine (and likely too close to one another for health officials liking). Runners chugged along Seattles city streets drenched in sweat. Boaters filled the citys waterways.
A high of 86 was recorded at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle. The previous record there for May 9 was 83 degrees, set last year.
We have high pressure over the area and that leads to offshore flow, said National Weather Service meteorologist Johnny Burg, meaning air flow was coming to Western Washington from inland areas rather than the cool Pacific Ocean.

(205,467 posts)It melted during the day, but it definitely coated the roads and stuck to the trees. This is the latest I can remember snow - the last time was a rare blizzard in very early May back in the late '80s.

(31,392 posts)but has a weekend place in the Poconos has been there for weeks, working from home, and plans to remain there through the fall, posted a video of it snowing yesterday from her front yard. It was beautiful and she narrated it with the date, May 9th.
