Nailed it. I've thought this for months now. How else to explain Mitt Romney's total lack of core beliefs? His willingness to say absolutely anything according to the political needs of the specific time and place in which he finds himself? And his willingless to lie, lie, lie as if it's nothing whatsoever?
He just wants to be president because it's a goal of his. He wants to be the ultimate winner - to win the ultimate contest. He doesn't give two shits about our country. He just wants his name in the books. What would he do after elected? He really doesn't care, and would therefore just let his handlers decide for him.
Scarborough's entire opinion piece is most definitely worth reading as an eloquent expression of disillusionment felt by the Republicans right about now. But the irony is impossible to ignore. Scarborough was one of the Republicans pushing for Romney the whole time, knowing (correctly) that the more truly conservative clowns like Gingrich and Santorum could never be elected. The entire Republican Party elite chose Romney over the majority preferences of the voting base who wanted someone else. They gave Romney all their money to push him past the Tea Party favorites. Well they got what they wanted. And now they're having some serious buyer's remorse.

(47,953 posts)He wants to lower his taxes, preferably to zero. And maybe devise ways to make more money through Government interventions. It's all about the Benjamins for Mittens.

(11,804 posts)Lets face it - there are a lot easier ways to make money than running for president, if it really was all about the benjamins.

(25,415 posts)Romney was pushed as a child to be ambitious. His father was probably a good man but worked hard for what he got. Mittens was handed everything, was ungrateful and now thinks he is owed this. He has no vision, not a conservative nor moderate one. He does what is expedient at the time and his positions change to fit the wind. He is soulless and almost inhuman. Which is why his campaign will implode on itself because he has nothing to offer. Even W. had a vision, a neocon one that was destructive. But it was something. Romney has nothing but the need to win.

(7,960 posts)Aside from rabidly defending his right to keep his tax returns private, Romney has not taken a strong stand on anything. By this point his position on so many issues has shifted so many times that even he can't keep track of them--hence the kerfuffle last weekend when he seemed to endorse parts of Obamacare.
His dad ran for president and lost. By all accounts his father was a decent man with strong personal convictions. Mitt on the other hand will never let any personal convictions--if he actually has any--get in the way of winning. We already know he's ruthless.
There's a reason why anyone who has ever run against him despises him even though Republicans must not show their distaste in public.
This is a bit off topic but I wonder if John McCain was Harry Reid's source on the tax issue. He saw those tax returns. He could have put that whole thing to rest but he chose not to.

(25,415 posts)Repubs cared (I think George Romney was right). I think Mittens avoids taking actual positions on anything because of that.

(9,033 posts)just like W; except Romney's father was an actual human being, with human feelings, capable of relating to / understanding other human beings, and the world as it is.
Which is why Romney senior lost.

(7,113 posts)And it's the same reason McCain and GWBush ran for president: Daddy issues.
GWBush had a father who held up little brother JEB as the ideal presidential candidate, so Uncurious George ran, showing up both his brother and his dad, especially when Dubya "finished the business" his daddy didn't: taking out Saddam.
With McCain, he ran for president only to become Commander in Chief, the only job in the world where he would outrank his Admiral daddy and Admiral granddaddy.
And of course, with Mitt, it's the same way: a father who was a corporate CEO who ran but failed to become president. The only way Mitt can do his daddy one better is to win what his daddy lost: a presidential election.
Mitt doesn't give a damn about domestic issues or foreign affairs or improving America; he only cares about filling out his resume with the one achievement that eleuded his father.

(5,995 posts)If GM had been forced to go bankrupt and seek private funding, there is a chance that a Bain engineered takeover would have come to the SLC Olympics savior to run GM. To Mitt, heading GM would have topped his dad and also burnished his rep for the 2012 campaign. Would also explain why he's tried to take credit for GM.

(21,188 posts)This Dinesh fool thinks he knows how President Obama thinks. What a crock but from what I've seen of our President he doesn't have "daddy" issues as he had role models in his step father and grandfather. Unlike McCain, Bush, and Rmoney they were probably ignored by their fathers who pursued their careers while ignoring their children. My brother in law is a conservative who's father was too busy to be a father to him because he had a successful law career. My brother in law worshiped his absent father. He is the most needy person I have ever met.

(24,766 posts)What is also striking to me about Rmoney is his sense of entitlement. This is why he can bald-faced lie and switch positions with impunity, claiming to hold Obama's positions before Obama did!
Rmoney was BORN entitled. No one has ever questioned his decision-making or assertions. Why would they start now? Why would he have to justify any position? All he has to do it state it, and it is becomes a given, a truth? At least that is how it has always worked in the business world for him. No risk. No self-examination. No higher goals or objectives. Just short term wins.

(70,740 posts)Plus, HIDE their true motives and agenda, are mendacious. The motive in the incessant proselytizing is to *attract* (convert) people, extending to physical appearance of being squeaky clean, "normal" (khakis) and big on entertainment (OSMONDs). It aint just the OSMONDs: Find a Mormon and theres all kinds of singin n dancin going on, besides other forms of entertainment, like Glen BecKKK.
If anybody thinks I'm generalizing or pushing personal observations into bigotry territory: I knew a teacher who was a Mormon bishop, totally very personable and totally "nice" *and* indefatigable sponsor of the folkloric dance club, attract attract attract, and a couple of their missionaries would not reveal what (beyond Jesus) they believe differently ("milk before meat" . When Mittens evades and dodges, he's not doing secular flip-flopping, he's doing an ingrained Mormon thing.
In that BBC documentary, Mittens' second cousin, who is ex-Mormon and therefore "alienated" (shunned) by/from family, said, "They don't realize how much they are into brainwashing."

(6,994 posts)Scarborough's comments during those primaries was "why don't we just chalk this up as a loss and look forward to 2016"
Then he got the scripts for Romney and he was not about to stray from the scripted message until now...
This is his message for today ..but wait, tomorrow will be a different script and J Scarborough's will follow that script and have nothing but praise for this robotic candidate...But one has to be careful how that is framed..It could be that the next SCOTUS ruling could be that yes..Robots are people too.

(14,572 posts)during the primaries - Scab never directly supported Mittens.
But, EVERY time when he was being pushed or over taken by one of the wacka loons, be it Bachman, Pizza Clown, Nwet, Santorum - he would work VERY hard at hammering them with issue/talking point that the establishment Rs put out to cut them off at the knees. He was VERY much in line with the establishment - they knew the base did not like Romney, so they could not come out and flat endorse him, but they were very quick and aggressive to take down each of the other candidates when they started to make their runs.
He got the guy he was backing.
And, absolutely, I think what this moron did the other night was so far beyond ridiculous, that some of these clowns can't abide it. But, the wind will blow another direction soon, and Scab will go with it.

(20,317 posts)He doesn't give a shit about the traditional wedge issues, and doesn't particularly care about things like foreign policy. He's completely devoted to the concept of wealth and privilege, however, and he is constant as the North Star on that topic. He's no less an ideologue than someone like Scarborough, who would (I expect) use the office to cram his gospel into everyone's lives. Romney's gospel just happens to be built solely around money and class.
