Virginia announces agreement to waive witness for absentee ballots for June primaries

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring announced Tuesday an agreement to waive the requirement that a witness sign absentee ballots sent in the mail for the June primaries.

According to an order submitted to a federal court, Virginia will accept absentee ballots for the June 23 primaries without the signature of a witness “for voters who believe they may not safely have a witness present while completing their ballot.”

“This agreement is a win for Virginians because it will protect both the health and voting rights of those who would otherwise have to violate social distancing requirements and jeopardize their well-being just to exercise their fundamental right to vote,” Herring said in a statement. “No Virginian should have to choose between their health and their right to vote during this pandemic.”

Under state law, any voter who submits an absentee ballot by mail must open the envelope containing the ballot in front of another person, fill out the ballot and then ask the witness to sign the outside of the ballot envelope before it is mailed.

1. I wish NC would waive the witnesses too. We have to have two witnesses.

I don't know even one person in this county who would be a witness for me. ALL of my friends who were here all moved to the more civilized counties in NC or to more civilized states entirely.

2. What about a notary/witness at a bank or UPS store? It costs

a couple bucks but it's something.

I googled it; FedEx (formerly Kinkos) no longer notarizes, US Post Offices don't notarize.

for me these days. I haven't allowed anyone in my home since Feb, and I don't see that changing until my health improves, or we get a vaccine in place.

Two witnesses is steep anyhow. Most that do require witnesses only require one, not two. NC needs to waive it altogether at least for right now, during this pandemic.

5. I'm in NC as well, but I always thought absentee required two witnesses. If pressed, I could....

possibly get the grocery deliverer to witness my signature, but I'd rather not, if you know what I mean. Right now, I have them deliver my food to the garage, and I take it from there, after wiping everything down.

6. They do require two witnesses here in NC.

Some only require the one witness. I think Virginia is normally one witness, but I am not 100% sure. Two is a bit much I think, at least right now. Right now, we should be able to just vote however they can let us do it safely.

I wish I could get my groceries delivered, but even pickup is a nightmare here in Richmond County.

They don't do delivery for groceries here in Richmond County, that I know of. Even the few restaurants, other than Domino's and Little Caesar's, that did deliver even food, quit because they kept getting robbed so much.

Walmart will let you come pick the groceries up, but even that is a nightmare.

I had a really bad experience trying that the other night at the Rockingham Walmart. This is a cautionary tale for anyone thinking about trying them out right now, because of one associate who should be fired, imo.

The app kept saying delayed until the last minute. At 7:40pm, the app finally said go and I got the email to go ahead and get the groceries. I had ordered them a full day before, so it was over 24 hours later. It is understandable right now they may be busy. So, I was prepared to wait or whatever. I am not the unreasonable type.

The website said they were open until 8:30pm. So, there should have been enough time even though I was further away than they had me listed on the GPS. My address is one of those that never actually shows up on the GPS in the right place. Most people get sent to a church down the street if they put my address in.

The app estimated I would get there at 7:53pm and I got there at 7:55pm. When I got there, some other customer was there in her pickup truck and there were two Walmart associates talking to that customer. One of those two Walmart associates got an attitude with me before I even was able to get my car in park and told me they were closed and to leave. I called the number on the sign in the parking space for pickup and asked if they were really closed and the one who answered said no, they were not closed. She told me she would be right with me in a few minutes. I was happy about that, especially since that other associate had told me they were closed and to go away and it is a bit of a drive* from where I live all the way over to Walmart.

This whole time the other two associates were over there chitchatting with that other customer. It appeared they knew each other. Anyhow, the 3rd associate, who was clearly doing all the work around there, brought my groceries out and loaded my groceries. About that time another pickup truck pulled up.

The 3rd associate started to head over there to see what that customer's name was and the first associate and her tag-along male associate who had been talking to their friend came over telling the 3rd associate to make sure I paid. Their friend had to swipe her card on a handheld machine they had. I had paid online already. The 3rd associate tried to tell the 1st hateful one I had already paid.

That was when things got horrible. The other customer who was clearly a friend of the hateful 1st associate said, "I didn't get to pay ahead of time. Why not?" The 1st associate, who had lied about them being closed, been rude to me, and wanted to make sure I paid, came over and yanked, and I mean YANKED, my paperwork out of the 3rd associate's hand.

The 1st associate, her tag-along associate AND the other customer, their friend, were looking at my receipt, AT my debit card information.

That one was highly unethical to show another customer MY debit card information like that AND to yank that receipt out of the 3rd associate's hand that way.

So, now, I'm not even sure if my debit card information is out there for that random customer who was friends with the bully 1st associate to just use or whatever. Showing one customer's debit card information to another customer that way should be against the rules at the store. I think it should be against the law.

Either way, I was glad to get away from that bully. I may go hungry rather that do that again.

I wish my aunt was still alive. She had the stamina to call Arkansas and get something done when they did something egregious at Walmart like that. She would get them fired for something that bad. I don't have the stamina nor the patience. I just want it known to look out for Walmart in Rockingham if you get your groceries by pickup and that one associate and her male tag-along are there. She is a bully who thinks nothing of pushing other associates around and showing your financial info to random other customers.

Ugh. I wish things were back to normal and I could go back to Food Lion and find some groceries on the shelves there again. I would MUCH rather go to Food Lion because they are courteous and act more professional. That is where I usually go. I wish things would return to normal at some point soon.

For the record, all of them had masks, but only the 3rd associate had her mask actually over her nose and mouth. The first rude associate had her mask around her neck and so did the 2nd male associate. Only the 3rd one had her mask on. It's not like they don't have the masks here in Rockingham's Walmart. Getting them to wear them is another story. They are the only people other than me in Rockingham that I have seen with masks and that 3rd associate is the only other person here I have seen wearing a mask. I have been getting snickers from adults and children alike for wearing a face mask the few times I have had to go out during all of this.

*I would rather order online if I need something that would require a trip to the Rockingham Walmart, because it is further from home than I like to go even normally, and always a nightmare in some way. Once they put this Walmart supercenter here in Rockingham, the deal was Winn Dixie, Bi Lo, and one of the Food Lion stores had to all go. That was how they worked that out. We had a Walmart before that but it wasn't one of the large supercenter Walmarts. We lost Winn Dixie, Bi Lo, and several others. Most local grocers folded soon after Walmart was up and running too. I avoid Walmart for the most part. I prefer Food Lion, but they are out of just about everything I need right now.

7. That sounds like a horrible experience. Have you checked to see if Instacart operates in your area?

I've been using them every week, for nearly a year now. In the Triad area, where I live, they'll shop at Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Aldi, Lowe's Foods, CVS, and a couple of others. Until recently, I rarely had an issue with things being out of stock, but I just had a delivery yesterday, and there were only a couple of items they couldn't find. With the app, you can virtually follow your shopper through the store, giving approval or disapproval of replacement items. It's very convenient, and all the shoppers have been extremely pleasant.
Whenever I want food from a restaurant that doesn't have a drive thru, I use GrubHub and Door Dash.

Fortunately, before my last surgery, I bought things in bulk. I was a BOGO fanatic. I've probably got enough cleaning supplies, paper products, hand soaps & sanitizers to last for another couple of years. I'm not a prepper, but I just can't pass up a bargain.

Your experience at Walmart should definitely be reported to someone, but I understand if your options are limited, you might not want to get on the wrong side of the staff there. There should be some way to report the incident anonymously, and there's no way in hell some unrelated person, or customer, should be allowed to look at your card information; that sounds criminal to me.

Anyway, we can only hope that somebody figures a way out of this mess, and SOON.
