Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said the next coronavirus relief legislation must include liability protections for business owners who reopen, Bloomberg reports.
As he reaffirmed the Senate will return May 4, McConnell said that without protection from lawsuits, business owners could end up with years of legal claims over their efforts to restart the economy.

(4,612 posts)kind of liability. People in power need to be thinking about how their actions could lead to others being injured or killed.

(25,253 posts)He knows it's unsafe to re-open too soon. He knows that if businesses re-open too soon and their employees get Covid-19 that there is a potential for lawsuits because the employer is endangering his/her employees.
The employers have told McConnell, Trump and the Repugs that they are hesitant to open too soon and they would be subject to such lawsuits if their employees get Covid-19 unless they have liability protection.
Trump, the Repugs and McConnell are rushing the re-opening because they are only concerned with the November election. They don't care about the lives of people that they are putting in peril.
Unfortunately we will have to watch them fail at re-opening as positive cases and deaths start ramping up again because they want to jump the gun.
Trump still hasn't solved the initial problems and there is still a lack of PPE, masks and testing. As hospitals become overwhelmed again and States continue the stay-at-home orders - we'll be back in the soup again and this time it the American People will really be pissed.
In order for Trump, the Repugs and McConnell to convince employers to re-open knowing that it is too soon - they have to be able to give the employers an assurance that if there are negative consequences as a result of this re-opening - that they'll be protected from any resultant liability (i.e., lawsuits from employees, customers, etc).
Again - Trump, the Repugs and McConnell have no regard for the safety of the American People. They are only concerned with maintaining their power base of the presidency and the senate.

(11,738 posts)If businesses are not following guidelines for safety for their employees and customers, them lawsuits are how we handle things in the US. Why would McConnell want to deprive the customer and worker their means of protection?
Obviously, that is a rhetorical question. McConnell is always, all about protecting big money and leaving the rest of us in the cold.

(8,053 posts)and their ridiculous MAGAts and trumpanzees have, thanks to Fox "news", blamed it on the "liberals" and the "democrats".
This thing with Mitch is exactly in line with all of the laws that have been passed since Reagan that chips away at people's rights against corporations. Remember when the republicans ruled that nobody can sue their health insurance company for denying funds, even when the insurance company said something would be covered, and then it wasn't? Well, it went downhill from there.
Then we had municipalities declaring bankruptcy, or corporations merging with another company, and totally WIPING OUT PEOPLE'S RETIREMENT that they had worked their whole lives for? Republicans made laws saying that those people were shit out of luck, and their rightwing judges ruled those employees pensions didn't constitute a "contract" that couldn't be broken.
This is how republicans do we the people.
