After a presentation Thursday, which touched on the disinfectants that can kill the novel coronavirus on surfaces and in the air, President Trump pondered whether those chemicals could be used to fight the virus inside the human body.

“I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute,” Trump said during Thursday’s coronavirus press briefing. “And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets inside the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.”

The question, which Trump offered unprompted, immediately spurred doctors to respond with incredulity and warnings against injecting or otherwise ingesting disinfectants, which are highly toxic.

“My concern is that people will die. People will think this is a good idea,” Craig Spencer, director of global health in emergency medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, told The Washington Post. “This is not willy-nilly, off-the-cuff, maybe-this-will-work advice. This is dangerous.” ...............

The MSNBC coverage I saw had a camera behind and to the side of Trump, so you could see him and Bill Bryan and Dr. Birx as he streamed his bizarre, disordered speculations and was turning genially to Bryan to prompt what he expected to be positive responses each time. Upon discovery, she was vomiting spontaneously, and had slurred speech and oral mucosal discoloration. On hospital arrival the patient became unresponsive with shallow respirations. Rapid deterioration of vital signs and mental status ensued, with cardiorespiratory arrest from which she was resuscitated. A second cardiac arrest resulted in death.

We report the case of a 31-year-old man who injected less than 1 mL of bleach and then experienced transient left-sided chest pain and vomiting.

We report an unusual case of parenteral self-administration of household bleach. This patient developed transient hemolysis and profound acute kidney injury requiring renal replacement therapy.

An 18-year-old female was brought to the emergency room by her mother with black urine (Fig. 1, panel A) less than 2 h after self-injection of 100 mL of Clorox® Lemon Fresh Bleach (1–5 % NaOCl and 0.1–1 % sodium hydroxide) through a tunneled catheter intended for treatment of purported chronic Lyme disease.
