I know she is racist and she's still my sister. I just can't do it even though I know how little she thinks of me. I guess I keep hoping she'll see me differently. She thinks there is something wrong with me and has made some snide comments off and on for a long time. She uses the "N" word regularly. She goes on and on about Obama being Muslim and not being American. She's got every nasty RW talking point. She proclaims her Christianity in one breath and in the next she's as hateful about Obama as I have ever seen her toward another. It's disturbing.
The racist I unfriended was my ex-stepbrother. His father and my mother used to be married to each other. His racism was insidious and it felt like my FB page was getting diseased.
I enjoy the liberal and progressiveness on FB. There are some nice anti-Rmoney/Ryan stuff and it's most certainly not the bulk of the content on FB. I've got some really good stuff that makes FB a decent place.
Plenty of people post some religious stuff, but it's not offensive at all and I don't mind. It's rather pleasant at times.
At least getting rid of some of the negativity might make FB a little more enjoyable.

(75,480 posts)I've dumped a couple of friends (in real life, not facebook) because I couldn't listen to the racist talk anymore. I don't know if they know they are racist because they seem to be using a lot of code words usually heard on Fox News, but when I pointed it out to them, they were pissed at me. So I decided I didn't care to socialize with them anymore and haven't.

(2,391 posts)Have you thought about filtering your sister's posts into a folder on FB? This way, you can see on the left hand side (under Friends) of your newsfeed whenever there's a post from her, but you don't need to see it if you choose not to do so. I do that for some people I know so I don't get ambushed by some of their politically-inspired posts. This way, you wouldn't have to even block her, which would mean she couldn't see your posts, either.

(1,370 posts)That's a very personal decision. If it comes time to let go, you'll know it. That's up to you. You're obviously doing your best, and you should never regret that.
It's hard.

I hope your own life brightens with the absence.

(12,448 posts)Everybody's talking about unfriending this RW asshole and that racist nutbar or that cult member, but how did they get to be friends in the first place if they're like that?

(9,001 posts)But the second you post something offensive... BOOM.
I've met some really interesting, progressive people that way. And very few jerks.
I'm a total introvert, so the entire internets are great for my "social" life.
If you are one of the extroverts who makes up 80 - 90% of the population, I guess "friending" people you don't know seems.... weird. But that's a label I've gotten used to over the years.

(4,840 posts)But my cousins and family are right wing who I'm kind of obligated to befriend on Facebook.
They are not too vocal about politics, though...at least not on Facebook.
In RL it's a different story.

(31,011 posts)The other is my ex-stepbrother which I did unfriend. His crap was poison and I got sick of seeing it. The straw was that photo of the dead body of Ambassador Stevens.

(6,160 posts)They were only acquaintances, not really friends. A few times I challenged them on right wing lies and they calmly agreed to disagree. But, I got tired of seeing their hatred of Obama pop up and I wondered why I was putting up with it. I am not putting up with it now. Their minds were not going to be changed and I was not going to even try any longer. My FB page is more pleasant now. They can wander around in idiot land with one less person seeing their spewing hatred.

(24,461 posts)Guy was too much of a red-baiting, Paulite conspiracy-theory racist for my tastes. While he didn't like Romney, he SUPER-hated Obama and blamed everything on Democrats.
