I think most Americans, Democrats or Republicans, understand that there are times when we set politics aside, and one of those is when weve got a direct threat to American personnel who are overseas, President Obama said.
And so I think that if you look at how most Republicans have reacted, most elected officials, theyve reacted responsibly, waiting to find out the facts before they talk, making sure that our No. 1 priority is the safety and security of American personnel.
It appears that Gov. Romney didnt have his facts right. The situation in Cairo was one in which an embassy that is being threatened by major protests releases a press release saying that the film that had disturbed so many Muslims around the world wasnt representative of what Americans believe about Islam.
In an effort to cool the situation down, it didnt come from me, it didnt come form Secretary Clinton, it came from people on the ground who are potentially in danger. And my tendency is to cut folks a little bit of slack when theyre in that circumstance, rather than try to question their judgment from the comfort of a campaign office

(62,325 posts)The statement from the Egyptian Embassy was made six hours, according to Sharpton, before the protesters began climbing the walls and removing the flag.
Romney assumed the statement was made AFTER the breach of the Embassy.
I hope the rest of the media points this out. He was claiming that the Embassy made the statement after being attacked to try to apologize to the attackers when in fact that is not what happened. And he blamed Obama for what he called apolgizing to attackers. There were no attackers when that statement about the movie was made.
I think he will seriously regret this.

(7,476 posts)is there is no honest way to interpret the statement the embassy made as an apology. Romney even says we apologized for our values, when the statement did nothing of the kind. The statement only disassociated the U.S. government from the film. Romney flat out lied, time mistake or not. Nobody in the media seems to be talking about it.

(17,505 posts)Really! I'd say, it's actually a statement of fact. The film ISN'T what most Americans think about Islam.

(62,325 posts)administration, eg after the disrespect of the Koran in US held detention centers was revealed. Bush made statements to the effect that the US Government condemned the disrespect of anyone's religion.
I don't remember anyone on the Left criticizing him for those statements.
He made a complete fool of himself and I don't see too many Republicans supporting him either, except for the fringe elements of course.

(21,506 posts)Yesterday while driving I was listening to our local windbag republican jihadist on the radio going on and on about our weak president and his penchant for apology. I finally got fed up and called in since he takes callers. The screener asked what I wanted to talk about and when i told them I wanted to ask if he would read the statement that was the supposed apology I immediately got hung up on. Not really surprised but...

(10,724 posts)if you listen clearly, he criticized the statement released after the attacks, then points out that it was released twice - and criticizes that it was re-released after the attacks.
I think its apparent from what he said that he knew the statement was first released before the attacks, but it would weaken his narrative to say that so he just fumbled around it.

(62,325 posts)and seemed to think he had no idea what he was talking about. Which is probably true either way as I have a feeling someone else told him what to say, one of his political 'advisers', who should be fired if that was the case.
Interesting though if what you say is true, it shows clearly his lack of interest in the tragedy itself and his determination to use it to score some political points.
I can only imagine the fear those people in t he Embassy must have felt that night and anyone with a shred of compassion would not even think of criticizing them for any decision they made. It was their lives on the line and in Egypt at least, it may have helped avert a worse outcome.
