Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHey, people on welfare, conservatives would like you to know the rules. So here they are:
If / when you lose your job, be sure to sell all your nice electronics and luxury goods immediately and make sure you are always dressed well in public (but not too well, because then you are clearly not in need of any financial assistance and will be judged for not immediately selling all your nice clothing, too).
Cover up your tattoos, or people will snark that you are spending your welfare money on body art, even if you have had those tattoos for years, or you have a friend who is a tattoo artist who did them for free.
Are your shoes nice? Better not wear them in public, especially while at the grocery store paying for food with food stamps, because you MUST have somehow magically converted those food stamps into enough expendable income to buy those shoes. Never mind that they were a gift, or you bought them years ago, or that they actually have huge holes in the soles and tattered insoles because you cant afford to replace them.
As a bonus, be sure not to have a job with flexible hours or work from home or work as a stay-at-home parent, because judgmental people will be on your ass and assume you are on welfare based on limited or non-existent evidence (even if you are not) and whine bitterly about having to contribute to social safety nets for the needy. That is right: You dont even have to be on welfare at all, you can simply be out in public with your kid(s) during normal business hours and have total strangers assume you are on government assistance if you dont look prosperous. Isnt that cute?

(75,480 posts)I shouldn't complain about being short every month if I can afford to go to the beauty shop. I go every other month to get my roots done. That's it! I'm looking for a job so I can't look like a hippie.

(3,469 posts)Just don't be black or brown. Of course many conservatives think welfare is synonymous with black. Seriously, in many parts of the country, most of the people on welfare and/or foodstamps ARE conservatives. Conservatives don't really mind needy white people using those programs. In their minds, that's what those programs are for. They are just furious that black and brown folks get assistance, too.

(74 posts)You should read the comments on my blog. So many people have to deal with the shame of doing one thing wrong: Being fucking POOR. It's SICK that these Bible-thumpers have found a way to pretend that being selfish and judgmental is somehow supremely moral.
Ayn Rand believed that too, yet she mocked religion as being irrational. They really have the worst of both worlds, huh?

(3 posts)Since comments on this article in the various places it has been shared have indicated some confusion or ignorance about what welfare actually IS, I am contemplating another article that goes into some detail about how people qualify, for how long, and how much of our tax dollars actually fund help for the disadvantaged, poor and struggling as compared to, say, corporate welfare handouts which are nearly twice the cost.
Here's a related article about demonizing the poor and deciding that all welfare recipients are drug-users. As we know from Florida, that is bunk. http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/09/13/welfare-white-and-drugless/
You just have to follow the money (and note the redness of the state) to see why this idea got some traction.
