President Donald Trump said Monday he had the ultimate authority to dictate to states how to reopen their economies, and that hed craft his plans with advice from a council of top business, medical, and political leaders.
By Wednesday, both claims fell apart. He retreated from ordering governors to reopen, after constitutional scholars and even some conservative Republicans said it was beyond his power. And he backed away from an economic council, announcing hed hold a marathon series of calls with business leaders instead.
For the president, its becoming a pattern.
Trumps public statements on the coronavirus outbreak show him running into the limits of his power, as well as his ability to bend events, politicians and even the national narrative to his will. While hes previously used his political standing and bluster to compel cabinet members and fellow Republicans to carry out his wishes, hes found a virus thats killed more than 27,000 Americans so far to be undeterred by his usual tactics.

(23,105 posts)Of course he won't take responsibility unless pushed beyond his normal endurance - which isn't much. If enough official people refuse to provide him the cover and the agree that it's safe to reopen the USA in the middle of a pandemic, he might just get mad and do it himself. There's no way he will protect us, he's proven time and again he wants to profit from our deaths, not keep us living. I thought the "Economic Council" would do this, but surprise, surprise, a number of them actually don't want to be responsible for massive deaths at their places and the resulting lawsuits these would entail. They pushed over and over for testing, the exact thing that drumpf absolutely refuses to let happen because it would prove the real size of the issue he's still trying to hide.
