They're utterly screwed, with no tourism revenue coming it at all their city no longer has any sustainable income.
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman called the statewide shutdown one of "total insanity" during a city council meeting Wednesday morning, and she urged the governor to allow the state to reopen.
"This is truly an opportunity for having a bully pulpit as your mayor," began Goodman, "and I am going to take advantage of that before we begin our public comment."
The mayor challenged Gov. Steve Sisolak's directive to close nonessential businesses during the coronavirus pandemic in an effort to minimize its spread, saying there is "no data" to support why the city is shutdown and there is "no plan in place" for navigating through it or coming out of it.
Experts, she says, tell her the coronavirus is not going away any time soon. Goodman compared it to the common flu and other viruses.
"This virus, or a derivative thereof, will be part of what we work through going forward," she said.

(146,317 posts)nobody would be there. Nobody's flying. Nobody's driving. Nobody is going to risk staying in hotels and gambling on a casino floor.
It's not going to help to reopen the casinos. People aren't going to gamble their health or their lives by going to Vegas any time soon.
Vegas is screwed - perhaps forever.

(2,249 posts)Vegas won't be as much fun gambling with (few) others in masks and gloves. Have at it though. There will be a handful of gamblers that will flock regardless.
Las Vegas and Orlando are in a world of hurt. I predict an exodus of service talent from both cities as it will be some time before they are anywhere near pre-coronavirus.

(6,811 posts)And chances are MANY of them would HAVE the virus already because they are prone to take huge risks anyway. So people who go to Vegas on a lark, for the shows, once a year, hard to say....

(4,241 posts)Take any place that people would go to that isn't open right now. When will YOU feel comfortable going back there as we did in 2019? I honestly don't know how long it will take me to feel that way again, if ever. Picking up a pizza is scary. I plan out my trips to the grocery store as I never did before. I teach elementary school and wonder how we convince all stakeholders that it's okay to hold class again.

(I'm not a gambler).
The proposed room rates were *still* around $200 a night with $35-50 daily "resort" fees.
Those places are dreaming if they think that people are going to come back in droves at those prices.
They need a serious attitude adjustment.

(8,790 posts)The Las Vegas that was until recently is toast for the foreseeable future.
How about making Las Vegas a walled city for the elderly?
One could only get a one way ticket into LV with no pass out.
Others in services (medical, entertainment, etc.) could also opt to go to LV.
So we have all these senior citizens living in LV, even having jobs.
Las Vegas modified for the care, comfort, affordability, and quality of life for the elderly.

(9,213 posts)not just the gambling, but entertainment, eating out, etc. In my family we probably save $300 per month at least on entertainment, eating out, excessive purchases, driving all over to god knows where, etc.

(838 posts)Goodmans jurisdiction only consists of parts of the Northwest valley, a bit around Nellis, downtown, and south to Sahara Ave. She has NO jurisdiction over the main bulk of the Strip. Thats on unincorporated county land. She has no jurisdiction over North Las Vegas or Henderson.
She has delusions of grandeur about her importance. She cant force people to put their lives at risk to work and she cant force people to book vacations in the little part of the valley she does have jurisdiction over.
Oh, yeah, and her mayor pro tem is Michelle Fiore.
(Im so glad I live in North Las Vegas. Mayor John Lee has been supportive and generally stayed out of the way.)
