Trump's Lies Are Killing His Supporters as COVID Starts to Sweep Rural America

Trump’s Lies Are Killing His Supporters as COVID Starts to Sweep Rural America
By William Rivers Pitt,
Truthout
Published April 16, 2020

snip//

What happens when this thing really and truly burns through rural America? It has already begun, and because of all those Trump supporters standing shoulder to shoulder at capitols and churches to shout their defiance of science and the “Deep State” into the virus-polluted air, it will get worse.

It will get worse within days, if the pattern holds, and there is no reason to expect otherwise.
The match has been lit. In two weeks, these rural areas — which have lost so many of their their hospitals thanks to decades of conservative budget cuts — are going to be locked into the same nightmare the urban areas have been dealing with since March, but with far less medical infrastructure prepared to confront it.
How many people who listened to their president and his Fox News mouthpieces, who jammed the churches because the president said it was safe, will be dead by June?

It begs the deadly, wretched question: How many Trump voters are going to die between now and November? How many people who listened to their president and his Fox News mouthpieces, who jammed the Michigan capitol steps and the megachurches on Easter because the president said it was safe, will be dead by June?

Quite a lot, I fear. This is the very living essence of tragedy and farce. Trump has labored mightily to convince his people that this is all some sort of ruse to keep him from being re-elected, and millions of those people have swallowed it whole.

This is a snake eating its own tail in real time while the snake-handler-in-chief cheers it on … except we are not talking about snakes. These are people, all of whom are somebody’s children, many of whom have children. They trusted Donald Trump, and that will get many of them killed while subsequently prolonging a pandemic that has already infected 2 million lives worldwide.

I wonder if they will still think it was worth it come the summertime. I wonder if they will want a word with Mr. Trump once the virus he called a hoax has its way with them.

My town isn't really shut down. The restaurants are drive-through only, but most workplaces are still open (albeit with modest additional precautions).

Once Trump and Brain(less) Kemp give the go ahead, everyone (except a select few) will go right back to normal. Unless the virus is extremely sensitive to heat and humidity, we are abso-fucking-lutely guaranteed a second wave. Hell, for us, it'll just be a continuation of the first wave. Our curve won't even have had a chance to flatten in the first place.

multiple times for good cause? A lot of people here remember his efforts to keep people from voting for Obama and Hillary and want him to stay gone. Do you really think filthy articles like, "Hillary Clinton: The Neocon in Democrat's Clothing" didn't undermine voters' belief in her as a lifelong liberal Democrat? And help elect Trump?

Well, he's been at it again with a third presidential candidate: Joe Biden. Google Truthout and any top Democrat's name to make what he's up to pop far more visibly than checking current website offerings. Try...Pelosi just for fun.

But time allows us to check for truth with the benefit of hindsight and determine whether political writers are wise men or fools and/or subversives. Even those who once believed Pitt's description of Obama as a "Trojan Horse" president inserted into the WH by Big Business should now be able to recognize that insidious slander for what it was, AND to recognize the recurring theme being pushed about our Democratic nominees.

How about this one: "Super PACs Are Pouring Millions Into Backing Joe Biden." Recognize the recurrent deceit being instilled into receptive brains AND the massive lie itself? About the presidential candidate who ran and won on almost no money?

NO to this hostile agent, please.

Big numbers. And remember, “days” as we understand them only get counted around our own sun. A “day” in the fathomless turn of this pinwheel that stretches beyond all known sight and sound may have only just begun. Tick.

On at least one of our own “days” in this unmeasurable ocean of time, you were afforded the opportunity to cast a ballot for Bernie Sanders, to knock on doors for him, to hold his sign aloft.

Remember the bird at Bernie’s podium four years ago? Consider, now, the cosmic chances that came together to make such a thing possible. A long combination of astronomy, anthropology, biology, physics, ornithology, politics and simple beauty clockworked that moment into existence.

It is an astonishment that bends light to be here, now, within this mote in the temporal eye of all existence. Look at the stars tonight. Look, and realize how lucky you are to be part of this pinprick of time, to share it with Bernie Sanders and everything he stands for. Four and a half billion years of the planet never heard of him. You did. That is more than luck. It’s a blessing from the universe.

Appropriated, overly-embellished, and repurposed to pay homage to a politician, it's just embarrassing.

She told far more truth than William Rivers Pitt and Truthout ever did. However, if she was reinstated the attacks on her would start immediately. I would probably be on a jury for one of her posts within a day, just like I was on juries for her posts frequently back in 2015 and 2016.

How dare a woman of color have an opinion. I saw that in the office when I worked and I saw it on DU. BTW, check my profile--I'm a white male.

Pitt has his platform on Truthout, but I would much rather read Bravenak's opinions than Pitt's opinions, the guy that said President Obama was a POSUC and who criticizes Democrats on a regular basis. I have no respect for him whatsoever.

She posted things here that people did not like. Someone dug deeply enough to find out her real identity and address. They sent her threatening things in the snail mail. She is the mother of minor children. That is completely uncalled for!

I would not like it if I learned there were people threatening Will Pitt. However, he makes no secret of who he is.

or a "piece of shit used car salesman" and promote the "both sides" nonsense a problem on a site for Democrats? It isn't. She's the base. Nothing to complain about. She was very kind, one of the few members here who was nice to me when I first joined, gave me the benefit of the doubt and didn't assume I was a sock or troll. She was nicer than I could ever be to some people.

Bravenak was a Bernie Sanders supporter until she wasn't and never insulted or name-called anyone not supporting Sanders. Much better wit than Pitts, more interesting, better writer too.

37. Although William Pitt sometimes makes some sense in his writings,
Thu Apr 16, 2020, 01:08 PM
Apr 2020

His execrable performance after Barack Obama took office demonstrates that he is not a writer whose judgment should be trusted. He attacked President Obama crudely and obscenely from the very beginning of his first term in office, and even more viciously after the ACA was adopted.

For his performance, he was banned from DU, and rightly so. He called our President a "piece of shit used car salesman" after he misunderstood the ACA with regard to some issue. He was incorrect in what he said, but there is no forgiving that sort of an attack on a Democratic President.

His writings have no place here because of that, in my opinion. I say that, meaning no disrespect to you as a long-time, prolific poster on DU. I would simply request that you post no more from that source.

check his writings right up to TODAY and say he should be forgiven. Imo, he should be sentenced to 10 years in a cell with Trump. And that's if this is all just personal malice, not even if he's a paid agent for one of our enemies. Smearing Democrats is a lot more than merely an avocation for him. He puts a great deal of work consistently into it.

48. 39-year-old farmer from rural New York county fighting for his life
Thu Apr 16, 2020, 02:04 PM
Apr 2020

"Travis Duffy should be spending the day working on the farm he manages, while getting ready for the birth of his son in about five weeks.

Instead, the 39-year-old Canastota man is in Upstate University Hospital’s intensive care unit, fighting to stay alive and beat the coronavirus. The virus has a stranglehold on him, and Duffy’s family and girlfriend say it’s hour by hour.

Travis, who has had asthma since he was a child but is otherwise healthy, is on a ventilator and has pneumonia, said his sister, Jessica Duffy. He has been flipped on his belly to help him breathe, she said.

They are all praying for his recovery, and hoping he will qualify for experimental plasma therapy as soon as possible.

His girlfriend, Kilee Coye, 25, has tested positive for the virus, and has some symptoms. She is 35 weeks pregnant. While she doesn’t have a fever, she has lost her sense of smell and taste, and has a cough, headache and some vomiting."

If it's happening to an under 40-year-old farmer in rural New York, it's definitely going to happen to others (Trump supporters or not) in rural areas of America.

77. This brings up a question I have had for some time. Is it safer right now to be in an urban area
Thu Apr 16, 2020, 08:17 PM
Apr 2020

or a rural area?

On the one hand, urban areas have a lot more people close together so there are more opportunities for the virus to spread. But urban areas tend to have more medical facilities and more health care personnel.

On the other hand rural areas are less densely populated so hopefully the virus will not spread so readily because there are fewer people . But rural areas have fewer hospitals and clinics and fewer doctors.

The way things are going we might have answers to these questions soon enough.

I live in a rural area myself. So far out of a population of 60,000 people in my county there have been 11 confirmed cases and one death. At the present time nobody with covid-19 is hospitalized in our local hospital so their facilities have not been overrun yet. The hospital says it is ready for this and there is no shortage of medical supplies. I hope they are telling the truth but I wonder if they just might be saying that so that people aren't scared.

85. I live in a rural area, too.

We have 28 confirmed cases and 1 death in our county. The hospital closest to me has only four ICU beds. We use another hospital and health care system to the north of us. They are affiliated with Madison WI as well. I don't know how any of them feel about their levels of preparation.

The thing that worries me here is non-compliance with the stay at home rules. Some of these MAGATs deliberately flout them. They mock the virus, and laugh at people who wear masks. I sometimes see them congregating in parking lots.

The largest city in our county has a population of a little less than 10,000 people. Some of the cases are from that city. I think the others may be from nursing homes.

I intend to stay home as much as possible. I hope you do the same. Be safe.

really scary is the little town of Albany, GA. When people congregate for church, weddings, funerals, etc., that could impact an entire town.
I hope rural areas are now more aware; Albany wasn't so lucky.

Apr 2020

He's taken the Michael Moore tactic on fortune telling... basically, if you make enough predictions then you're likely to be right one time by accident. Then, he can forever point to that ONE TIME (out of a thousand) that "he was right" as some sort of justification that his experience and knowledge and wisdom should be trusted. All because of "one time" he just happened to be right.

William Pitt strikes me as someone who's a pompous ass, near as I can tell.
