http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Temptation_of_Christ_(film)#ControversyI remember the theater in France being fire-bombed.
"Pat Robertson condemned the film as an offence to a hundred million Christians. It ridicules and blasphemes the faith that we have all committed our lives to'.

(1,986 posts)the local baptist church, commonly referred to as "Fort God", actually protested so much that the cable company blocked out HBO when it was to be aired.

Fortunately, no one hunted down Martin Scorcese.
I remember one old lady yelling at me while waiting in line that I was going to burn in hell if I saw the movie.
I said that if I were going to burn in hell it most likely would be for much more worse sins already committed.

I love the internetz. I found a picture of that night.

(111,354 posts)and found it rather innocuous but beautifully written, even in translation from Greek. I didn't bother with the film as so many films based on books turn out to be letdowns.
I do remember the sour faced pickets in Boston, thumbing their rosaries and looking like exactly the type of angry people I've always tried to avoid. I also remember some violence at theaters elsewhere here in the US, worse overseas.
Your point is well taken. People don't like the rote learning of irrational beliefs questioned in any way, and it doesn't really matter which irrational beliefs they are. It usually ends badly.

(113,581 posts)the film itself) and took great delight in pointing out to the reporters and camera crew that the protestors could not even spell what they were protesting.

(47,675 posts)..., pardon the connection, but JESUS H. FUCKING CHRIST! What the hell is wrong with people. If they're that sure about their religion, why would anything another person says or performs have any impact? The young-earth sorts think God put dinosaur bones on the planet to test their faith. Can't they take a little criticism or are they that unsure of their own "faith". The sames true for Jews, Muslims, Protestant v. Christian shit, and every other religion. You have to be pretty damn shallow and insecure to get upset about such things.
Oh, and rMoney - it's okay to have a beer - just not with me. I'll save my beer time for Obama, thank you.

(82,383 posts)They will say nobody killed anybody or threatened anybody with death and that's hard to argue against. My best argument so far is that circumstances are different. Say there was a threat of Libyan imperialism over the US and we really had some reason to fear our stability - then we might similarly cling harder to the religion and make more of it.
The making fun of the religion aspect isn't the only thing going on - that's what the right tries to reduce it to.
Muslim culture does still contain a lot of what we would have long ago abandoned (polygamy, women's rights) - the problem is the freepers and such thinking that means they can feel superior and claim we are "better" and thus entitled to attack Muslim countries. People should not lose site of that's why the freepers enjoy things like this happening.
